Commercial Parking Plan Approved for Edgewater Development

Oakmont officials have approved a parking plan for the commercial development portion of Edgewater at Oakmont.

Oakmont officials have approved a parking plan for the commercial development portion of Edgewater at Oakmont.

Last week, council voted 6-1 to OK a modified parking plan, which includes 118 parking spots for the development. Councilman Tim Favo dissented.

During a public hearing last month, Kacin Companies—the developer of Edgewater—proposed some changes to the residential portion of the development to meet market demands. Those changes were approved by council.

Kacin also had proposed an initial parking plan for the commercial development—space available includes a retail strip center, a bank site and an anchor retail pad—with 113 spots. Under borough code, it was recommended that 142 spots be available for cumulative use. A traffic study taking peak hours and shared parking into consideration recommended 108.

Last week, Bruce Corna, vice president of Kacin, presented an updated plan with 123 parking spots available. However, the extra 10 spots would take away some landscaping proposed in the original plan.

Councilwoman Nancy Ride and Councilman Tom Briney advocated for more landscaping, saying that it helps aesthetics and makes the area visually appealing.

However, Councilman Tim Favo said the borough has "serious parking issues" and it needs "every parking space we can get."

Officials compromised, OKing a plan with an extra five spots, rather than 10.
