Normal Memory Lapses

You run into a person you know, yet you can't bring up his or her name to save your life. You start to say "ruler", but the word sticks on your tongue, even though you know what it's used for, the letter it starts with, even how many syllables it has. Those are the normal memory lapse of blocking. You walk from the living room into the kitchen, only to forget why you came. That's absentmindedness. You excitedly start to tell a friend about the fascinating article you read last month, then can't remember the key points. That's transience. Learn about these three normal memory lapses and four more from a discussion of "The Seven Sins of Memory: How the Mind Forgets and Remembers" by renowned Harvard psychology professor Dr. Daniel Schacter.
