Summer History Lecture Series

The Oakmont Carnegie Library is holding a Summer History Lecture Series about topics of local interest. There will be one lecture a month, on a Wednesday evening in June, July, and August.

On Wednesday July 18th at 6:30, join us for a fascinating presentation by Joseph Szalanski, who wrote the book Boarding the Westbound: The Journey of a Depression-Era Hobo. From the publisher: "Joseph Szalanski could only come to know his father, Joseph F. Szalanski, from his meticulously-kept hobo diary as he traveled the country, riding the rails in 1932 America. Young Joseph had immigrated to America from Poland and was killed in a steel mill accident shortly after his return from hobo life. At the time of his death, his son, young Joseph was only two months old. In Boarding the Westbound, Szalanski, through his father's writings, takes readers into the secret world of the American hobo." We are pleased to welcome Mr.Szalanski to the Oakmont Carnegie Library to talk about his father's adventures on the rails!
