Graduating Class at Riverview Generates Buzz on Facebook

Riverview seniors are graduating on Thursday, June 6, and something that was posted about the commencement in a local newspaper is generating buzz on the Riverview High School Alumni Facebook page.

"85 students to graduate class of 2013? How sad is this ..." wrote Patricia Ricupero.

"What an embarrassment to the district," she later wrote.

Colleen Sullivan Howard was also surprised to see that number.

"That's all?! I thought 118 was a small class in 1983," she wrote.

However, not everyone on the comment thread thought it was so bad.

"I don't think it's an embarrassment to the district so much as it's a statement on the population of Verona and Oakmont. With that few students graduating, I'd guess that the older generations are staying put and families with school age children aren't moving in. It will be interesting to see how the new Edgewater development affects student enrollment," wrote Donna Cox Zibreg.

"I don't think it has much to do with anything changing. I was class of 1989 and we had 81 graduate. My sister was 1994 with only 60 some graduates. Riverview has always been a very small district," wrote Dusty Nolan.

Some commenters who graduated in the 70s said they graduated with more than 200 students in their classes.

Do you think 85 is a small graduating class? Does it have you worried? Why or why not? Tell us in the comments.
