New RHS Carpeting on Hold

Riverview officials agreed to put off installing new carpets at Riverview High School.

hallways won't have new carpeting this upcoming school year.

On Monday, the Riverview School Board was presented with two bids for the replacement of carpeting in the high school's hallways and offices—the lowest of those bids coming in at $52,486.

Officials estimate that replacing the carpet in the entire building could cost about $90,000, so they had agreed to pursue the project in phases.

However, the project had not been budgeted for in the general fund, and money would have to be taken from the $2.2 million fund balance if it was to be completed by the beginning of the school year, according to district business manager Frank Thompson.

School Board President John Hackworth said the board already has a number of projects that are being paid for out of the district fund balance—the new locker room project at the high school, a new cooler/freezer and possibly new band uniforms.

"I'd prefer to wait to see where we stand," Hackworth said.

Thompson said that while it's too early to tell, he doesn't anticipate much leftover money from the 2011-12 school year to be moved to the fund balance.

Board member Lisa Ashbaugh agreed that waiting would be the best option. She said there are other projects, such as installing new classroom doors at Verner, that are more of a priority than carpeting.

"It's a safety issue," she said.

Officials agreed to revisit the issue in the spring.
