Plum School Board Notebook: August Voting Meeting

Items discussed at the Aug. 31 school board meeting.

The following items were discussed at the Plum School Board's Aug. 31 meeting.

Slow Pitch Softball

Slow Pitch Girls’ Softball will be a club sport at beginning in the fall of 2012.

Girls who play fast pitch softball in the spring will have the opportunity to play the new club sport in the fall.

Athletic director Bob Alpino he hopes the addition could help the district include more female athletes.

Saturday Detention

Saturday detention will continue this school year.

The board agreed to hold semi-monthly, two-and-a-half hour Saturday detention sessions this school year. A sponsor will be paid $27 per hour.

Cook Managers' Agreement

The board approved a three-year agreement with cook managers in the district.

According to the agreement, cook managers receive health insurance and other benefits. They are eligible for a raise of up to 2 percent this year, depending on their evaluations. Raises for the 2012-12 and 2013-14 school years will be determined annually by the school board.

The cooks in the district make $14.90 to $19.39 per hour depending on the school.

Grants

The district received the following grants for the 2011-12 school year:

  • Accountability Block Grant for full-time kindergarten staff for $221,738.
  • Two $200 Library Resource Material grants for Plum High School social studies materials.
  • Two $9,534 Highmark Healthy High 5 Challenge for physical education equipment for Pivik and Regency Park elementariness.

Retirements

The board accepted the following retirements:

  • Peggy Hagood, Food Service Worker, retroactive to July 26.
  • Marion Brown, Bus Aide, retroactive to Aug, 25.


Alternative Education

The board hired two alternative education teachers. They will be paid $27 per hour.

Melissa Stewart-Leger will be a science teacher and Anthony Morinello will be a social studies teacher.

Food Service Workers

Nancy McCormick, Tracy Depkon and Patty Savinda were hired as district food service workers. Their first day was on Aug. 31.

Long-Term Substitute

Scott Lazzaro was hired as a long term substitute teacher, beginning Jan. 2, 2012 through the end of the 2011-12 school year.

He will be replacing Erika Richman, Science Teacher at Oblock Junior High School.

Nurses

Two nurses were hired, effective Aug. 30.

Donna Patten will be a staff nurse at Center and Regency Park elementary schools. Michele McIntyre, as a staff nurse Floater, will be assigned a day at each building on a seven day rotation.

Bus Drivers

Sharon Carr, Blaise DiNatale and Diane Kunz were hired as district bus drivers.

Leaves

The board approved the following leaves of absences:

  • Beth Brown, paraprofessional at Plum Senior High School, an unpaid leave beginning Aug. 31 through Sept. 5.
  • Pamela Kennedy, paraprofessional at Oblock Junior High School, an unpaid intermittent leave beginning Aug. 31 through Jan. 16, 2012.
  • Susan Hernandez, paraprofessional at Adlai Stevenson Elementary School, an unpaid intermittent leave beginning Aug. 31 through June 2012.
  • Leanne Christ, second grade teacher at Pivik Elementary School, a maternity leave beginning on or about December 21, 2011 through February 21, 2012.

Coaches

Danielle Riley was hired as the senior high Girls’ Soccer Assistant Coach for the 2011-12 school year at a stipend of $3054.00, prorated. She is replacing Brooke Taylor, who resigned.

Bernie Pucka was hired as the eighth grade Girls’ Basketball Coach for the 2011-12 school year at a stipend of $2,596.00.

Bobby Franklin Sr. was approved as a volunteer Varsity Basketball Assistant Coach for the 2011-12 school year.
