Riverview 2012-13 School Calendar Could Include Four Two-Hour Delays For Instructional Support

The Riverview professional development committee has requested four two-hour delays to help with the implementation of a positive school-wide behavior program.

Riverview School District students might have two-hour delays that are not snow-related next school year.

Officials are considering including the delays into the 2012-13 school year budget, as suggested by the professional development committee, which is made up of teachers and administrators from each district school building.

The delays would occur half way through each quarter to assist with a new , a program supporting common core standards, inter disciplinary practices and the culture of Riverview.

"A lot of districts utilize two-hour delays to get a little bit of professional development on what would otherwise be an instructional day," said Superintendent Chuck Erdeljac. "The challenge is that we know childcare is an issue."

School board members also voiced some concerns about the plan.

"It's usually a less effective day for students when there's a two-hour delay," said board member John Hackworth. "Especially in the certain parts of the courses might suffer more than others."

Verner Elementary Principal Jason Shoaf said each school building would be focusing on different issues, and it would be nice to have the delays in place for teachers and other personnel to review the program's progress without eliminating an entire school day.
