Riverview Final Budget Includes Millage Increase

Riverview officials adopted a final budget last week.

Depending on how their properties were reassessed, Riverview School District residents might be paying more—or less—in school taxes this year.

Last week, the school board approved an $18.6 million proposed final budget. Last year's millage rate was 25.3550. However, due to the county-wide property reassessment, the district's millage rate had to be reduced to at least a "revenue neutral" 20.3398.

The 2013-14 buget includes a property tax rate of 21.18 mills—an increase of 0.8402 mills. Though the district only was allowed to raise the tax rate by 0.4272 mills, it received state-granted exceptions for retirement and special education costs.

According to district Business Manager Frank Thompson, property owners had to pay $2,535.50 for every $100,000 of assess property value last year. In 2013-14, they'll be paying $2,118. Whether residents experience a tax increase or decrease depends on their individual reassessments.
