New Teacher

The board hired Shannon James Kahne as a fifth and sixth grade language arts teacher at Verner Elementary School. He is replacing Judy Mahler, who retired.

Kahne, who will begin working for the district on Aug. 22, said he's excited to become a member of the Riverview team.

Resignation

Music teacher Chris Fox has resigned.

Fox, who also was the boys and girls tennis coach, accepted a teaching position in Virgina. His wife, Stephanie, resigned as the boys tennis coach and the junior high head girls soccer coach.

Officials will be looking to fill the positions.

Supplemental Contracts

The following supplemental contracts were approved:

Larry Kumar as the head softball coach; John Paul Bartucci and Michele Bartos as the musical directors; and Marlee DeLuca as the volunteer cross country coach.

Officials still are looking for a musical producer. Anyone interested should call the administration building at 412-828-1800.

Auditorium Manager/Webmaster

Tom Ketterer will be the auditorium manager for the 2011-12 school year at a rate of $5,300. Elissa Miller will be the district's webmaster for $3,750.

Computer technicians

Computer technicians Brian McCormick and Robert Hanson have received 2.5 percent raises. They will be paid $15.22 and $15.77 per hour, respectively. Those rates are effective July 1 through June 30, 2012.

Leaves

The board approved leaves for Jennifer Spenik from Aug. 22 to Jan. 3, 2012; Emily Mitchell through Dec. 9; and Kristy Lape from Sept. 19 to Jan. 20, 2012.

Beth Orbin, teacher at Verner Elementary, also will take an unpaid leave of absence.

Substitutes

The following long-term substitutes were approved: Emily Lapcevic, Rick Nese, Becky Buttgereit and Kristen Hoskinson.

DART

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit DART program will rent space at Verner Elementary school at a rate of $7,920 for the school year.

Contracts

The board approved the following contracts:

Apex Learning for $8,225. The program is a digital curriculum used by the district for alternative learning and advance placement review.

Milestone Centers Inc. for 985 hours of service at an hourly rate of $36 per hour—a total cost not to exceed $20,000—for special and regular education students. The program provides services to people with behavioral and intellectual challenges throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. 

Delta-T Group Western Pennsylvania Inc. for personal care assistance and nursing services on an as-needed basis. The program provides paraprofessional services for students when district personnel are not available.

AlertNow, which provides emergency telephone contacts, for $3,000.

The AESOP substitute service for $4,180.

EduLink Inc., a software that tracks credit hours for teachers under Act 48, for $1,432.

Donation

The Riverview Athletic Association made a $1,500 donation for the installation of an additional wall and padding in the Tenth Street Elementary gymnasium. The work was completed several months ago.
