Report: 'Huge Misunderstanding' Caused Riverview Lockdown

Police said the incident was a "huge misunderstanding"

Riverview School District is operating under normal working conditions after a lockdown Thursday morning caused by a threatening mark that turned out to be a "huge misunderstanding."

The lockdown went into effect at 9:30 a.m. and was lifted around 10:30 a.m.

WPXI reported Riverview and Fox Chapel school districts were briefly placed on lockdown after someone reported to O'Hara police that a man who works in RIDC Park made a threatening remark.

According to police, the man was talking on his cellphone and said, “He was going to shoot everyone at the school,” the new station reported.

After cell phone towers were used to pin the man's location in Oakmont, Riverview was placed on lockdown.

However, the service location was off because a tower near the Hulton Bridge was no longer there, according to WPXI.

Police also thought the man's daughter attended Fox Chapel High School, but later learned she is a student at Springdale.

Investigators told WPXI the man’s daughter broke her leg and was not permitted to enter the school because her crutches could be used as a weapon.

This caused the man to make the remark. He will not be charged in the incident. His daughter was allowed into her school after obtaining a doctor's note.

Police said both lockdowns were the result of a "huge misunderstanding," according to WPXI.

All students and staff are safe, according to Riverview.
