Riverview School District Receives Grant for STEAM Program

Riverview School District is one of 20 districts receiving money to fund the STEAM program.

Provided by the Claude Worthington Benedum and the Grable foundations, the grants will be used to fund a variety of innovative and unique initiatives that engage students in STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics—subjects.

The new initiatives vary widely and will include the creation of robotics 3D prototypes, outdoor classrooms, a summer STEAM academy and an online art auction gallery.

Riverview has received $20,000 for the program.

The STEAM grant distribution was undertaken by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit's new Center for Creativity, which was developed last year in partnership with Intermediate Unit 1 and the Benedum Foundation. The purpose of the center is to connect the region’s diverse and creative resources with educators as they infuse creativity into curriculum, instruction and school culture.  

Kelley Beeson, the center's director, believes that the Center for Creativity will become the go-to creativity hub for K-to-12 educators. 

"I’m eager to watch these projects unfold and see how they change the school experience for kids," she said.
