Boaters and Locals Are Invited to the Oakmont Yacht Club's Regatta

The private club invites Greater Pittsburgh mariners to participate its nautical events this weekend.

Regional boaters, who help keep local vessel shops and businesses running, can cruise into the Oakmont Yacht Club dock for a weekend of river fun at its annual regatta.

From July 22 to 24, Oakmont Yacht Club will celebrate its 109th Regatta, which offers plenty of activities, according to Molly Frank, the Regatta chairwoman.

“This year, I did a lot of work trying to come up with ideas,” Frank said

There are more than 12 hours of events on Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. with breakfast inside the yacht club and a fishing contest for kids. The volleyball tournament begins at 11 a.m., and the flag raising ceremony begins at noon.

The rest of the day includes tug of war, kayak and paddle boat racing, an “anything that floats” contest, a greased pole contest and a treasure chest—including prizes such as a Coach wristlet,  power drills a luggage set and kids’ games.

There will be a Chinese auction throughout the day, with a drawing at 8 p.m. Food will be served outside from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Fireworks at dusk will wrap up the Saturday activities.

Regatta events continue Sunday with breakfast at 8 a.m. followed by the Volleyball finals at noon and the tug of war finals at 2:30 p.m.

Children events include a tube race, which requires a swimsuit and life jacket, and a "dinosaur dig" where kids can win money or a prize.

No food or coolers are allowed onto the Oakmont Yacht Club property. All children ages 12 and younger are required to wear a life jacket near the dock.

Dee-jay “Steamer,” Tracy Shroads, will return to this year’s regatta.

“He gets involved with the crowd, and he gets the crowd involved with him,” said Carol Gosser, the regatta co-chair.

Frank credits her 21-member committee with helping to organize and manage events for the weekend.

“This is probably the best committee I ever worked with,” she said. “If the weather stays on our side, we’ll have a nice regatta."
