Dek Hockey Rink to be Built at Riverside Park

Oakmont Council and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation are teaming up to build a new rink at the park.

Oakmont resident and hockey enthusiasts might soon be able to play dek hockey at Riverside Park.

Oakmont Council and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation are teaming up to build a new rink at the park. The Penguins Foundation, Highmark and Citiparks got together to build 12 dek hockey rinks in the region over the next four years. Currently, there's a rink at Banksville Park.

The rink at the Oakmont park will be located on the upper field (where the baseball field closest to the park and parallel to Riverview High School currently sits). The baseball field will be shifted toward the center of the field to make room for the dek hockey rink. A photo has been included in a pdf uploaded to the media section of this article.

The multifunctional rink can be used year round for dek hockey, lacrosse, field hockey and soccer. The facility will be open to anyone who wants to play.

The facility will allow for open rink time, but league play and hockey lessons also will be an accepted use for the rink.

The rink system—valued at $150,000—will be installed by the Penguins Foundation. However, the Oakmont Recreation Board and Oakmont Council are in the process of securing funding to perform the prep work—relocating the baseball field, provide drainage, clearing trees and laying asphalt on the surface.

Council has pledged $115,000 to get the project moving. The recreation board also is in the process of fundraising to ensure that the necessary funds to make the project happen are collected. Rec board members say funding needs to be available by the end of summer for the rink to be ready to use in the fall.
