Put another point in the win column.
The Plum varsity hockey team is riding high on a string of successes with a shut out against Shaler Monday night at Bladerunners in Harmarville.
The Mustangs won 4-0 thanks to a strong goaltending effort by sophomore net minder Taylor Cestra, who recorded her first varsity shut out.
She recorded a pre-season shut out against Latrobe this year.
Coach Stu Rulnick attributed the team's success to Taylor's 31 saves.
"Taylor was phenomenal," he said after the game.
Although she struggled at the beginning of the season, she has been steadily improving and making herself appear bigger in the net, Rulnick said.
Cestra said she wasn't paying attention to a shut out but rather focused her entire attention on each moment.
She credited her defense for keeping her game alive.
"My teammates in front of me played awesomely," Cestra said.
The defense, which also experienced a difficult start to the season, stood tall against the Titans and protected the net when Taylor was down by blocking shots and sweeping the puck away.
Cody Cenci scored the first goal of the game in the first period with assistance from Andrew Walters and Joe Randazzo.
The second period brought two more goals for the Mustangs — one from Hunter Brett and one from Nick Cicolini.
Cicolini scored the final goal on a power play in the third period, with assists from Randazzo and Brett. Cicolini also assisted Brett's goal in the second period.
A puck found its way past Cestra in the third period, but the goal was called off for high sticking on the puck.
The team's record now is 3-5-2. The Mustangs haven't lost a game in the last five they've played.
"The last five games have been literally the opposite of the first five," Rulnick said.
The Mustangs will take on Baldwin for their first game of 2011 on Jan. 3, at 9 p.m., at home.
"Everyone is excited for it because we're digging ourselves out of a hole," Cestra said.
