Cura Hospitality Chef Wins 'Cooking From the Garden' Competition at Longwood

Greater Pittsburgh area residents challenged their taste buds at the competition at Longwood at Oakmont earlier this month.

Area residents pronounced Chef Ryle David of Cura Hospitality the Grand Prize winner of the “Cooking from the Garden” competition hosted by Longwood at Oakmont in Plum earlier this month.

For the competition, Chef David, Chef Mark Clink of Family Hospice and Chef Kevin Klingensmith of Six Penn Kitchen prepared light, delectable dishes with fresh garden ingredients for over 100 guests. Some of those dishes included:

  • Fruit for compose fruit plate
  • Roasted beet salad with house smoked bacon, onion, apples, and sunflower seeds over red leaf lettuce with curry cream sauce
  • Garden vegetable and Chevre fritters with white bean pasta and basil lime oil

Attendees were then invited to put their taste buds to the test as they judged each meal on entertainment, best overall, presentation and taste. Participants were also able to take home the recipes of their favorite dish to re-create it at home.

“As strong advocates of maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle, we wanted to provide the greater Pittsburgh community with an opportunity to explore new ways to use their garden vegetables,” states Micheal Haye, Executive Director at Longwood at Oakmont. “We are grateful for our culinary partnerships and their participation in educating the community on healthy eating options.”

Chef David, a Pittsburgh native, received a gift card to Williams-Sonoma. Additionally, Pittsburgh resident Nancy Noyes won a surf and turf dinner for two prepared by Longwood at Oakmont’s Executive Chef.
