Group to Hold Trail Workdays in Boyce and North Parks on Sunday

Volunteers will be prepping trails at local parks.

Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group will hold a trail workdays in Boyce Park and North Park on Sunday.

The group is a nonprofit, volunteer organization that protects and encourages access to trails in the region. Members of the group work with land managers to maintain and construct narrow dirt
trails for all different types of trail users--hikers, bikers, dog walkers and more.

Nancy Trun, board member and co-founder of the organization, said the group's park steward identifies problem areas on different local trails for each work day.

"It might be cutting back brush, properly digging in a trail, addressing water damage issues, etc.," she said.

Andy Baechle, Allegheny County Parks Director, said he's thankful for the group's effort in county parks. He said the group deals with the 181 miles of trails in the nine county parks.

"I support that group professionally and personally," he said. "They do the hard work that is needed and other people don't want to do. It's critical for us to keep the trails user-friendly.

"They do a lot for us, and it's a blessing to have them working at our parks."

In Boyce Park, volunteers will be working from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Those interested in participating should meet at the New Dimension Pavilion--off New Texas Road in Plum--located next to the ballfields and tennis courts at 9 a.m.

In North Park, volunteers will be working from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those interested in participating should meet at the Sharon Shelter near Pie Traynor Field.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, water and appropriate shoes. Preregistration is not needed.

Volunteers are entitled to a complimentary basic PTAG membership after volunteering for 10 hours. For more information, see www.ptagtrails.com.
