RHS Homerooms Hope to Take the (Pan)Cake

The homeroom that collects the most donations for the "Pancakes for Soldiers" project wins a pancake party.

The Student Council is sponsoring a homeroom contest supporting the "Pancakes for Soldiers" project.

In honor of Veterans Day, the Riverview students volunteered to join the Oakmont Historical Society in supporting the project. They also will be writing letters to military troops to send along with their donations.

"Pancakes for Soldiers" supports the efforts of Army Chaplain Rod Gilliam, who is stationed at FOB Farah in Afghanistan. He travels to dangerous and desolate outposts to visit soldiers with his George Foreman grill. During his visits, Gilliam makes pancakes for the soldiers—more than 700 troops each week.

Student Council teacher sponsor, Michelle Walsh, and student members Chelle Rae and Kyle Osborn, are asking that class members from each homeroom donate either supplies and/or a monetary donation to the cause. The homeroom collecting the most donations will earn a pancake breakfast.

Items needed are: Krusteaz and Bisquick pancake mixes, peanut butter, cooking oil, syrup, precooked bacon and baby wipes.

The community is invited to support their favorite student, teacher or homeroom by dropping off supplies or a monetary donation at the Riverview High School office. The contest will run through Friday, Nov. 18.

Donations also are being accepted by Military Connections at the Oakmont Chamber of Commerce office, 504 Allegheny River Blvd. in Oakmont. Items will continue to be collected at the chamber after the school's deadline, but include that the donation is in support of the Riverview High School Students and the Oakmont Historical Society.
