Whether they are in the city or country, there are places near home where you can find fresh produce—or get seedlings to grow your own.
To every thing there is a season—and we are in the season of planting. Despite the frost warnings this week, May is the time when many plants take root. And not far behind are the early harvests. There are a number of local farms that provide a variety of seedings and sprouts, produce and other products as the growing season progresses. Some are urban farms, some out in the country. Firefighters from several area fire companies fought a house fire in Plum Borough on Thursday evening.
Fire crews fought a house fire on Stonehaven Court in Plum Borough, Thursday. The call came in at about 6 p.m. and the fire burned through the home's roof. As of 7:10 p.m., smoke was still coming from the house but the fire seemed to be controlled. Renton fire Chief Jason Davis said crews arrived to find the home's roof "fully involved." Firefighters aggressively attacked the fire and got it under control. "The building is still standing, which is rare for this type," he said. "The guys did an excellent job." Davis said the house sustained severe water and smoke damage. Though a cause has not been determined, officials think it might have started with a pool heater on the side of the house. In addition to the Plum firefighters from …

She contributes a whopping 45 percent of the gross annual income she earns as a procurement officer for an automotive finance company to her retirement—all while owning a home and remaining debt-free. Konkoly is actually well ahead of the retirement savings curve compared to many of her fellow Americans. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, fewer than half of Americans even know how much money they would need to retire. And nearly a third of employees who had access to a defined contribution plan such as a 401(k) did not participate …
