Obituary - Lawrence W. Mayer

Lawrence W. Mayer passed away Saturday, May 18, 2013.

Lawrence W. Mayer, of Oakmont, passed away at the age of 82 following an extended illness, on Saturday, May 18, 2013.  Larry was the husband of Barbara; father of Pamela Mayer Hitchcock (Robert), Virginia (the late Michael) McCarthy and Timothy (Annie) Mayer; grandfather of Catherine McCarthy. An MIT graduate, Larry’s focus was metallurgy, something forged as a young man aspiring to help build the planes he was fascinated to see flying overhead as a teen during WWII.  His father, a Colonel in the US Army stationed in China, Europe and the US, encouraged his interest.   Both Larry and his younger brother, Jim, were educated at McDonogh, a military prep school in Baltimore.  It was here Larry learned his love of sailing and the water.  As a …

George A. Aivaliotis passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2013.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2013 George A. Aivaliotis, of Verona formerly of Churchill, passed away at the age of 88.  George was the beloved husband of the late Isabella Aivaliotis; loving father of Artistotle G. (Mary) Aivaliotis and Chris G. (Dina) Aivaliotis;  dear Papou of George, Isabella, Michael, Sophia, Antoni and George Aivaliotis.  He was preceded in death by his siblings Antoni Aivaliotis, Pantelis Aivaliotis, Erini Kouvaris and Maria Tsambis.  George emigrated from Greece in 1950 to meet his wife Isabella, who was already here.  They settled in Gary, Indiana, where George worked for various industrial painting firms.  He relocated to Pittsburgh, PA in 1956 to work for the JL Manta Company.  In 1966, he took the initiative to start …

On Saturday, May 18, 2013, Samuel L. Amodeo, of Oakmont, died at the age of 74.  Samuel was the beloved husband of Kaaren L. Amodeo; loving father of Sherry Farina (Nick), Michael Amodeo, Rosie Biondo (Peter), Kay Janflone (Tony), Jon L. Amodeo (Miriam) and Suzanne Amodeo; dear brother of Roseanne McNeil (Chuck) and the late Katherine.  Mr. Amodeo was a graduate of St. James Grade School in Wilkinsburg and Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School in Oakland, class of ’56 where he was the first 3rd baseman in CCHS history.  He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired as Senior Vice President of Giant Eagle supermarkets after 40 years of service, also a member of St. Irenaeus Church, Oakmont and the Oakmont Country Club where he …
