Oakmont Resident Earns Gold Rowing Medal

An Oakmont resident earned a gold medal in rowing over the weekend. Natalie Sebastian finished in first place in the 2013 John Bennett Regatta Womens Senior 4X event. The event was held on Sunday, May 5, in Buffalo, NY. Natalie, a junior at Riverview High School, rows for Steel City Rowing Club in Verona. Do you have student news you want to share with us? Pittsburgh Marathon Photos and Winners

Among celebration, a family mourns the death of a 23-year-old man during the half marathon.

Nearly 23,000 people participated in the Pittsburgh Marathon on Sunday under a clear sky. James Kirwa of Kenya defended his full marathon title in 2 hours, 13 minutes, 37 seconds. “I flew in last night from Nairobi, but I thought that I could win since I knew the course and training had been going well,” said Kirwa. “I cramped a bit at the end, and maybe next year I will come back to try for the 2:10 event record.” American Mary Akor of Hawthorne, CA won the women’s 26.2 mile race in 2:37:35. In the half marathon, Kenyans Julius Kogo and Risper Gesabwa took the 13.1 mile titles in 1:02:32 and 1:13:16 respectively, with Kogo setting a course record. Dek Hockey Rink to be Built at Riverside Park

Oakmont Council and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation are teaming up to build a new rink at the park.

Oakmont resident and hockey enthusiasts might soon be able to play dek hockey at Riverside Park. Oakmont Council and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation are teaming up to build a new rink at the park. The Penguins Foundation, Highmark and Citiparks got together to build 12 dek hockey rinks in the region over the next four years. Currently, there's a rink at Banksville Park. The rink at the Oakmont park will be located on the upper field (where the baseball field closest to the park and parallel to Riverview High School currently sits). Who Should Make Up Next Class of East Boros Sports Hall of Fame?

Nominations are being sought for the Class of 2013.

The Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame, East Boros Chapter, celebrated its 35th year by inducting an eight-member class at Edgewood Country Club in Churchill Borough in October 2012. And with the Class of 2013 now under consideration, Patch wants to know: Who should be the next inductees into the East Boros Sports Hall of Fame? The East Boros Chapter encompasses the communities within the Plum, Riverview, Woodland Hills, Wilkinsburg, Penn Hills, Gateway, East Allegheny, Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford school districts, and each fall, the chapter inducts deserving alumni from these districts' high schools and high schools that preceded them who have brought lasting fame and recognition to Pennsylvania through their athletic achievements. …

NFL Flag Football Registration Set For Saturday

The non-contact game is for players from kindergarten to eighth grade.

Powerhouse Sports' 2013 spring season of NFL flag football will soon begin and registration is this Saturday, April 13. The season runs from May 5 to July 7 and the league is open to boys and girls in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Games are played Sunday at the Wovarena in Turtle Creek and Boyce Park in Plum. Registration is $125, with a family discount of $10 for each additional player.  Go to the Woodland Hills High School athletic office between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on April 13. Plum Football: Meet Coach Morgan

Matt Morgan, a Plum resident, former Mustang and ex-NFL player will coach the high school football team next season.

A former Plum High School Mustang and NFL player will be heading the high school football team next season. Matt Morgan, a 1999 Plum High School graduate, was hired for the position at last month's voting school board meeting. Morgan, a former football player for the University of Pittsburgh and the NFL's St. Louis Rams and Buffalo Bills, also has served as assistant coach at Gateway High School. He was inducted into the East Boro’s Chapter of the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame in 1999 and into the Plum High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Morgan is replacing former coach Frank Sacco, who led the team since 2009. The Mustangs won one game during the last two football seasons. They lost every game in the 2012-13 season.
