Plum School Board Member Receives PSBA Honor

Tom McGough has received the PSBA Master School Board Member Accreditation.

Plum School Board member Tom McGough has been awarded the Master School Board Member accreditation from the Pennsylvania School Board Association (PSBA).  McGough, who has been a Plum School Board member since 1991, was one of only seven school board members in the state to receive the accreditation in 2012.  The awardees are those who have demonstrated exceptional accomplishments in attaining the goals of effective governance and meeting the needs of students for the 21st century. PSBA has been awarding the Master School Board Member accreditation since 2007.  To date, only 30 individuals have had the distinction of receiving the honor. Riverview School District Receives Grant for STEAM Program

Grant money was distributed by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

Riverview School District is one of 20 districts receiving money to fund the STEAM program. Provided by the Claude Worthington Benedum and the Grable foundations, the grants will be used to fund a variety of innovative and unique initiatives that engage students in STEAM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics—subjects. The new initiatives vary widely and will include the creation of robotics 3D prototypes, outdoor classrooms, a summer STEAM academy and an online art auction gallery. Riverview has received $20,000 for the program. RSD Officials Consider Participating in Public School Advertising

The school board is considering paying $6,300 to participate in an advertising campaign promoting public schools.

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit is hoping member school districts jump on board to promote public schools. On Monday, Riverview Superintendent Chuck Erdeljac presented the AIU's plan for advertising to the school board. The AIU is asking all of its member districts to participate in the campaign and contribute monetarily. Riverview's portion would be $6,300 for a 30-second commercial. The entire project would cost about $250,000. Erdeljac, who was involved in a 20-member committee that worked on creating a proposal for the ad campaign, said group members are hoping at least 75 percent of the school districts participate. Sure, but I think people consider other options when, for whatever reason, the designated public school isn't meeting their needs. I don't think people rule it out before visiting or talking to the staff. And if they do, I don't think a commercial is going to change their opinion.   more ›
