The winter fun is just about over!
If you never made it to Boyce Park for skiing and snow tubing, you're going to have to wait until next season. The slopes closed for the season on Saturday, March 16. Boyce Park began accepting league and picnic game applications on Wednesday.
The Allegheny County Parks Department will accept applications for ballfield permits from organized baseball, softball and soccer leagues at Boyce Park in Plum Borough through Wednesday, Feb. 13. Applications must be filed in person by team representatives at the park offices, 675 Old Frankstown Rd. A certificate of insurance is required with an application for a league permit. Applications for fields at other county parks must be filed at those park offices. Individuals interested in scheduling picnic games may choose from the remaining dates beginning on Thursday, March 7, when the general release of open ballfield dates will begin. The ski slopes and tubing area in Plum are open.
If you've been wanting to hit the tubing slopes, you're in luck. The Boyce Park Snow Tubing Area reopened Tuesday, Feb. 5, after a brief hiatus. The slopes closed indefinitely last week due to poor conditions. The Boyce Park Ski Slopes also are open. For session times, click here. Get ready for some winter fun at the slopes!
The Boyce Park ski slopes and tubing area in Plum Borough open for the season! Weather and conditions permitting, slopes will be open on weekdays for one session from 3:30 to 9:30 p.m. On weekends, slopes will be open for two sessions, 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 4 to 9:30 p.m. The Boyce Park Ski Area offers rental equipment for skiers and snowboarders, in addition to private and group lessons. The Allegheny County Parks Department currently is accepting lifeguard applications for the 2012 season. County lifeguards must be 16 years of age or older and must possess all necessary certifications prior to May 28, including lifeguard, first aid, and adult, child and infant CPR training. Lifeguard applicants are also required to pass an aquatics test that will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, at North Allegheny Senior High School, 10375 Perry Highway in McCandless Township. Those taking the aquatics tests are reminded to bring a swimsuit and towel. The Allegheny County Parks Department is offering holiday gift certificates for the outdoor-loving people on your Christmas lists. Gift certificates for ice skating sessions, senior season ice skating permits, season ski passes, season pool passes, rounds of golf and senior golf permits are available. Ice Skating Sessions & Senior Skating Permits The county’s ice skating rinks are located in North Park and South Park. Skating sessions are $5 for adults (ages 18 to 59) and $3 for children (ages 5 and younger), youth (ages 6 to 12), juniors (ages 13 to 17), and seniors (ages 60 and older). The Allegheny County Parks Department has announced that the Oliver Miller Homestead in South Park will host an 18th Century Thanksgiving event from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20. Admission to the event is $2 per person. Long before President Abraham Lincoln made Thanksgiving a national holiday, it was common for frontier people to gather after harvest to give thanks and to visit with one another before winter set in. In keeping with that tradition, the “Miller family and their friends” (volunteers dressed in period attire) will prepare and display foods common to the 18th century using an open hearth and bake oven. Family, individual and senior pool passes for the 2011 season will be available for purchase at the Boyce Park administrative offices in Plum, as well as the Boyce Park Wave pool, both along Old Frankstown Road, beginning May 23. The fees for county pool passes are as follows: $110 for a family of four (two parents and two children or one parent and three children) and $15 for each additional family member; $60 for an individual; $30 for seniors 60 years of age and older; and $20 to replace a lost or stolen pass.
