Ninth-Annual Kerr Museum Antique Show Scheduled

This is the ninth year for the antique show benefiting the Oakmont museum.

Antique lovers will be in for a treat next weekend when the Kerr Memorial Museum in Oakmont will host its ninth annual Antiques Show. The Kerr Museum is set in a Victorian, Queen Anne-style home built in 1897 by Dr. Thomas R. Kerr. It is located on Delaware Avenue. The show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, March 9 and 10, at the Oakmont Country Club. The show will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The cost is $10 at the door. Tickets are valid for entry on both days. Dining will be available during show hours, however, only cash will be accepted. There also will be a preview party on Friday, March 8, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., for those who want to get a jump-start on the antiques shopping, or …

Hunter Brothers Store Owner Sells Century-Old Pieces

Frank Furko, owner of the Hunter Brothers general store, has some original items from the store available for purchase.

At the corner of Hulton Road and Allegheny River Boulevard in Oakmont, the former Hunter Brothers general store has sat with closed doors for about 10 years, but it is far from a vacant building. Inside sit century-old pieces from the store’s heyday that owner Frank Furko wants someone to purchase and put to good use. “I’d like this stuff to go with someone who can use it,” Furko, 80, said. “It’s great stuff. I’d keep it if I had the room.” The store was opened in the late 1800s by two brothers—the Hunter brothers—and was purchased from Thomas Hunter in 1947 by Furko’s father, James. “My dad worked here since he was 23 years old and stuck around until he was 94,” Furko said. “He never did anything but work here. This is a wonderful building and a piece of oakmont history. The down fall is that there is no parking on this end of town and that the centuries old building needs much work to bring it to code.   more ›
