If you are an artist who lives in Pennsylvania and has a disability, the Governor's Advisory Committee for People with Disabilities is looking for you. The committee is looking to showcase people's talent through the Works for Me 2013 calendar. Click here to see last year's calendar. Through this calendar, you can help raise awareness about employment supports for those who have a disability. This calendar will feature information about work incentives and will also include selected artwork. Oakmont artist Cy Assad worked to create 12 pieces of art for the children's section of the Oakmont Carnegie Library.
Oakmont artist Cy Assad says he always has been interested in art and creativity. Assad, 76, is a retired designer—he's designed the train systems in Miami, Detroit and San Francisco; the safari area at the Pittsburgh Zoo; layouts of local shopping centers and shops; and he has taught at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. But he created some of his best work in the last year, and it is now hanging up at the Oakmont Carnegie Library. The artwork is a series of literature-based paintings and 3-D characters. The 7-foot by 6-foot murals depict scenes from Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Peter Pan, Moby Dick, Little Red Riding Hood and Lord of the Rings. Each painting also has characters that accompany them. Those who enter the children's …

The Oakmont Carnegie Library will be unveiling artwork commissioned for the children’s area of the library this weekend. The artwork—to be unveiled on Sunday, Feb. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m.—is a series of literature based paintings and 3-D characters created by local Oakmont artist Cy Assad. The project itself was underwritten by funds from the FOOLs, Oakmont Library’s award-winning Friends Group. Anyone interested in attending the event can view the artwork, speak with the artist and meet members of the FOOLs. Everyone is welcome and light refreshments will be served.
