Happy Mardi Gras from Mardi Gras Drive in Plum Borough.
Today, Feb. 12, is Mardi Gras! Mardi gras is French for Fat Tuesday, the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the Lenten season fasting begins on Ash Wednesday. The Plum Senior Center is celebrating with a pancake dinner from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Call 412-795-2339 for details. The day sometimes is referred to as Shrove Tuesday—shrive means "confess." Lent officially begins on Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Wednesday marks the first day of the 2013 Lent season. Here's a list of Ash Wednesday services in Plum, Oakmont and Verona: PLUM Our Lady of Joy Parish—There will be services at 6:15 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Ashes will be distributed after the homily during these Liturgies. Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church—Ashes will be distributed during the 7 a.m., 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. services. Saint Januarius Church—Masses will be held at 7 a.m., 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Liturgy of the word with ash distribution will be at noon and 4 p.m. OAKMONT Saint Irenaeus Catholic Church—Ashes will be distributed at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., and 7 p.m. services.
