Pittsburgh native Allison DeBona stars in 'Breaking Pointe,' the CW's summer series elevating ballet's return to mainstream pop culture.
Ballet is having a moment. A moment that ballerina Allison DeBona hopes is here to stay. DeBona, a Pittsburgh native, stars in the CW Network’s “Breaking Pointe,” a reality series centered on behind-the-curtain workings of Ballet West, an elite company in Salt Lake City. The camera captures ballet’s gritty realism and its beauty under the hot lights, as well as the characters' quest for perfection, competitiveness and intensity of rehearsal—a true labor of love. DeBona grew up in New Castle and at 12 years old moved to the Steel City with her family. She began to train at Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company & School, located in Peters Township, under the instruction of owner Jean Gedeon—a notable name in the industry. The dancer took some …

Michael T. Villella is opening the ballet school on Allegheny River Boulevard this month.
Michael T. Villella of New Kensington recalls always goofing around and dancing, so when he was 17 years old, he started taking ballet lessons. "I was training with kids who were 6, 7 and 8 years old at the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet," he said. "I would travel to Carlisle once a week to train. I spent three years there." During his time training, Villella, 24, said he knew he'd become an instructor one day. But when the opportunity to dance professionally came up, he couldn't turn it down. "I went to New York after my third year of training to audition and I was surprised to get a few offers," he said. "I wanted to be a teacher, but I had to pursue the dancing first." Villella went on to perform with the Ballet Austin II in Austin, …
