Here's a roundup of items discussed by council at Monday’s meeting: Special Meeting about 2013 Budget to Take Place Borough Manager Lisa Cooper Jensen spoke to council about the 2013 budget she distributed earlier saying creating the budget was difficult since she was unsure of how much money the borough would actually collect from taxes due to continuing reassessments. “We have to use last year’s numbers,” Jensen said. “That’s all we can do right now.” The draft outlines funds for the general fund and sewer fund, and council President Tim Milberger said council needs time to review it and for discussion. Verona Residents, Officials Torn About Field Lighting at Cribbs

Verona Council is expected to make a decision about installing field lights at Cribbs Field at its March 13 meeting.

The debate about installing field lights at Cribbs Field in Verona continues, and residents and officials seem to be torn on the issue. On Tuesday, Verona Council was ready to take a vote on the matter until a possible safety issue came up. Officials agreed to hold off until next month's meeting. There would be about six light poles—three at the first base line and three at the third base line with five lights or so per pole. Officials stressed the lights are not stadium-type lights and would have shields to avoid overflow into the residential neighborhood. The poles would be donated to the borough and installed by Duquesne Light, and the Riverview Athletic Association would work to obtain grants to buy the actual lights. Officials have …

Plum Borough Council, PBAA Try to Work Things Out

As Plum Borough Council and the Plum Borough Athletic Association try to work out a lease agreement, some residents say it's a move in the right direction. Others, however, want the current PBAA board to step down.

Plum Borough Council and Plum Borough Athletic Association officials are in the process of negotiating terms for a new lease, but residents are split as to how it should be done. At Monday's borough council meeting, about 75 people were in the audience. Many of them attended in support of the PBAA, and others were against the organization's current board members. Last month, the borough sent a letter to the PBAA stating that they no longer would have rights to eight ballfields along Ross Hollow Road. The letter cited several permit violations. The athletic association has leased the fields for $1 a year. Last week, however, borough officials agreed to withdraw the termination notice in an effort to sit down with PBAA board members to …

Plum Grad Continues Focus on the Diamond

After Duquesne University cut their baseball program, Anthony DeFabio quickly found a new home at Pitt.

After having to pick up and move two miles down the street to continue his baseball and academic pursuits after the 2010 season, Plum graduate Anthony DeFabio continues his focus on taking his game to the next level.   DeFabio spent his first two years of collegiate ball at Duquesne University, but after the program was eliminated, DeFabio quickly found a new home for his bat and glove only a stones throw away at the University of Pittsburgh.   “Whatever happened at Duquesne happened,” said DeFabio. “And the coaches were great with helping me transition.”  His first season with the Pitt Panthers went very well, and he’s certainly happy with the move.   “Obviously academics were a priority, but the ability to have some playing time was …
