Celebrate the Festival of Lights with these local services and events.
This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8, and ends a week later on Sunday, Dec. 16. According to Chabad.org, Hanukkah starts on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev and lasts for eight days. For those of us who aren't attuned to the Jewish calendar, that translates to sundown on Saturday, Dec. 8. Chabad Jewish Center of Monroville will ignite a public six-foot menorah followed by a community-wide celebration on the third evening of Chanukah (Hanukkah), which falls on Monday, Dec. 10, at 5:30pm at the Holiday Inn Monroeville, 2750 Mosside Blvd. in Monroeville. Yom Kippur is, in short, the holiest day of the year in Jewish religion and culture. It is also referred to as the “Day of Atonement,” and the tradition is to solemnly fast for repentance and atonement of sins. Yom Kippur marks the end of the annual High Holy Day period (Sept. 16 to Sept. 26 in 2012), which begins with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year. On Sept. 25, observation will begin at sunset. The high holidays begin Sunday at sundown.
Two synagogues in Monroeville will be hold Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur services beginning this weekend. Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins Sunday at sundown.
