A limited edition box of Sarris chocolates showcases Johno Prascak's popular Pittsburgh skyline artwork on its cover.
What do you get when you cross crawdads, garlic, paint, sand and now Sarris chocolates? Pittsburgh artist Johno Prascak, of course. A limited edition box of Sarris chocolates—showcasing Prascak’s original artwork—hit shelves Monday, and he couldn’t be more ecstatic. “For an artist, it’s a deal that could go on for the rest of my life…and even in death,” he quipped. “It’s the best chocolate in the world. As I said on TV, I grew up on Hershey’s and my wife Maria introduced me to Sarris 30 years ago—I never looked back.” Prascak made the announcement Tuesday on KDKA’s Pittsburgh Today Live. He was featured in a segment called, “In the Kitchen with Johno Prascak,” where he cooked crawdads—something he told Patch was on his bucket list. The …

Retail Operations Manager Norm Candelore said, "It's all for the customers."
Easter is a holiday steeped in tradition, and for so many local families, a trip to Sarris Candies for chocolately treats is part of theirs. That tradition can go on unfettered starting today—because the retail shop in Canonsburg is now officially reopened. The store had been closed since a Feb. 3 fire, but the shop was in full swing Thursday, as customers perused everything from chocolate-covered pretzels to chocolate Easter bunnies. Although the day was overcast, Spring looked like it had already arrived at the venerable shop, with pastel colors dominating the interior design. Customers were greeted with over-sized stuffed bunnies and at least one fluffy yellow duck at the door—as well as Retail Operations Manager Norm Candelore. "…

Valentine’s Day gifts are tricky, because gifts on this day seem to imply so much more than gifts given on any random Tuesday. Whether you’re buying for girlfriends or just friends, the woman you just met or the woman you’ve been with for 50 years, here are a few suggestions for successful Valentine’s Day gift giving. Flowers Flowers are the gold standard of Valentine’s Day gifts, but they don’t necessarily have to be given out of undying love. Various rose colors have different meanings (yellow, for example, signifies friendship). Roses are the classic, but if you have a daisy lover or tulip enthusiast on your mind, don’t be afraid to change it up! If you go for flowers, check out your local florist. Fresher flowers, a more personal touch…

The owner of the Sarris Candies said he expects the store to be open within the month—or 'ASAP.'
Oversized stuffed animals wearing festive Valentine's Day bows sat atop shelves of boxed chocolates at Sarris Candies. A counter nearby is lined with chocolate bars. Stacks of chocolate-covered pretzels are arranged in another corner of the Canonsburg retail hot spot. But owner Bill Sarris held his hand out and beckoned to the whole lot of it, saying, "All of this—it has to go." And that's what workers were doing Monday at the store: Cleaning chandeliers and cleaning up after a fire erupted in the parlour portion of the building on Friday—and throwing away pounds and pounds of chocolate and other merchandise. A sign is posted on the door alerting customers that the store in still closed by order of the state fire marshal, and the smell of …

About a dozen employees Sarris Candies escaped a fire unharmed Friday morning.
About a dozen employees safely escaped a fire at Sarris Candies in Canonsburg early Friday morning. Kevin Wittik, who works in the shipping department, said he arrived at the Canonsburg store around 6:30 a.m.—when smoke first started showing. “I got in and got everyone out,” he said. “Smoke was just starting to be visible, but then it got pretty intense.” Wittik and fellow employees gathered in the parking lot as fire crews worked to contain the fire, which appeared to start in the ice cream parlor-side of the building—mostly in the roof and attic. And one concern was the upcoming Easter season—candy is sold at several local stores including the Verona Giant Eagle, Rite Aid in Oakmont and Plum, Joanne's Hallmark in Plum and Shop 'n Save in…

In honor of National Pie Day, here are two great pie recipes.
Monday, Jan. 23 is National Pie Day. Created by the American Pie Council, National Pie Day is dedicated to the celebration of pie. The American Pie Council is encouraging pie lovers across the nation to throw a pie party to pass on the love and enjoyment of pie eating and pie making. In honor of the day, I'm providing the recipe to my favorite pie recipe, courtesy of Paula Deen. Since the famous butter-loving chef recently announced she has diabetes, I also included her son's "healthier" version of the pie below it. Frozen Chocolate Mousse Pie Courtesy of Paula Deen of Food Network 2 cups chocolate chips 1 quart, plus 3 tablespoons heavy cream 1 tablespoon chocolate creme liquor 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 cups powdered sugar 1 pre-made …
