Outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel Closes this Weekend

The tunnel will remain open Memorial Day weekend.

The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) will be closed this weekend, May 17-20. The tunnel will remain open in both directions during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, May 24-27, according to PennDOT. The closing will occur from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 17, through 6 a.m. on Monday, May 20 so that crews can begin the replacement of concrete bridge slabs inside the tunnel and continue to remove the tunnel ceiling. When overall work is completed, vertical clearance in the eastbound tunnel will increase from 13 feet-6 inches to 14 feet-9 inches.   Additional improvement activities include foundation work for the sign structure of the Over Height Truck Detection System, electrical work and concrete …

Memorial Day Closures

Government offices and establishments are closed Monday.

If you have to run to the borough office, the post office or the bank, you'll have to wait until Tuesday. The Plum, Oakmont and Verona borough offices will be closed on Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Also closed are the local post offices; banks; district magistrate offices; the Plum Senior Center; and the Oakmont and Plum Borough Community libraries. All will resume normal business hours on Tuesday. The Port Authority of Allegheny County's bus, T and incline service will operate on holiday schedules on Monday. Work on Squirrel Hill Tunnel Rehab Project to Begin Monday

Get ready for traffic! Lane closures will begin next week.

Lane closures on the westbound lanes of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels are right around the corner. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced today that closures will begin on Monday. An inbound lane will close Mondays through Saturdays at 10 p.m. and reopen by 5 a.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Full weekend closures on the inbound lane will begin in July. The $49 million project includes updating electrical systems, lighting system, control system, ventilation system, structural repairs to the walls and arched ceiling, installation of a water line and other improvements. Construction on Squirrel Hill Tunnel Begins this Month

Closures, construction and traffic—all to come in mid-March!

Residents soon will have to find alternative routes to avoid traffic as the Squirrel Hill Tunnels partially close, creating an even larger construction headache for most who use the Parkway East on a regular basis. The $49 million project is slated to begin in the next few weeks by Walsh Construction Company of Canonsburg. “The Squirrel Hill Tunnels needs the rehabilitation work and this is the first major project in many years,” said James Struzzi, press officer for Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 11. “Secondly, we had funding available to do the major work and when we have funding available, we have to move forward.” The project includes updating electrical systems, lighting system, control system, ventilation system, …
