Verona Accident Causes Power Outage, Small Fire

Verona emergency officials responded to an accident on Wildwood Avenue early Sunday morning.

An early-morning vehicle accident in Verona left some residents without power Sunday. At about 2:30 a.m., borough police and firefighters were dispatched to the 500 block of Wildwood Avenue—by the Verona Motor Sales—for an accident. According to Ray Suchevich, Verona fire chief, the driver of a vehicle traveling on the road hit a parked car into an electric pole, knocking down some wires. The lines were sparking, and that caused a small fire in the wooded area near the scene, Suchevich said. Officials then had to wait for Duquesne Light to respond. Some residents in the area experienced "on and off" power outages, according to Suchevich. One person was transported to an area hospital with injuries. _____________________ Plum-Oakmont Patch …

Fire Marshal Rules Grease Fire Destroyed Home of Steelers Coach

Investigators said they've determined that running backs coach Kirby Wilson was injured after trying to put out the flames in a kitchen blaze.

Investigators have determined the blaze that severely burned Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson at his home in Seven Fields was caused by a grease fire, a state police fire marshal said today. Trooper Luke Nelson of the state police barracks in Butler said Wilson had been cooking chicken in the kitchen of his townhome on Jameson Way about 2:45 a.m. Jan. 6 when the stove caught fire. Nelson said evidence suggests Wilson, 50, was injured when he attempted to put out the flames. The coach, who still is undergoing medical treatment at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, has little to no recollection of the fire, Nelson said. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. According to a statement from the Steelers organization, Wilson …

Bill Sarris: Sarris Candies Shop Will Open 'ASAP'

The owner of the Sarris Candies said he expects the store to be open within the month—or 'ASAP.'

Oversized stuffed animals wearing festive Valentine's Day bows sat atop shelves of boxed chocolates at Sarris Candies. A counter nearby is lined with chocolate bars. Stacks of chocolate-covered pretzels are arranged in another corner of the Canonsburg retail hot spot. But owner Bill Sarris held his hand out and beckoned to the whole lot of it, saying, "All of this—it has to go." And that's what workers were doing Monday at the store: Cleaning chandeliers and cleaning up after a fire erupted in the parlour portion of the building on Friday—and throwing away pounds and pounds of chocolate and other merchandise. A sign is posted on the door alerting customers that the store in still closed by order of the state fire marshal, and the smell of …

The 50-year-old was severely burned Jan. 6 when an early-morning fire broke out in his townhouse on Jameson Way in Seven Fields. He was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, where he remains in critical condition in the hospital's Trauma Burn Center. "In addition to burns sustained over 45 percent of his body, he has suffered a smoke inhalation injury and will require multiple operative procedures in the future," the Steelers statement said.   An answer to what caused the fire at Wilson’s home also may soon be on the way.
