Auxiliary police by-laws, alcohol use at Riverside Park and more were discussed at last week's council meeting.
Here's a roundup of items discussed at the Sept. 4 Oakmont Council work session. Auxiliary Police By-Laws Oakmont Council is working on drafting by-laws for the borough auxiliary police force. Officials discussed adding a section to the rules indicating that members of the auxiliary police force follow a chain of command—the borough police chief, mayor and council—when there is a problem, and that they are not to consume alcohol before reporting to duty. They also agreed that members—all are volunteers—must be Oakmont residents. Officials said opening membership up to Verona residents might be a possibility in the future. As you prepare for your own holiday celebrations, here are some safety tips from the professionals at Zambelli Fireworks. Keep in mind—only hand, ground sparklers and other novelty fireworks are allowed to be purchased or used without a permit in Pennsylvania. Leave the rest to the Zambellis. Cherry bombs, M-80s, M-100s and silver salutes are all illegal. Tampering with fireworks or trying to create your own without the required permission and knowledge is also illegal. Always make sure you purchase fireworks from a dealer approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. These vendors are regulated and can provide legal and safe entertainment for …

The Zambelli family dazzles Pittsburgh with their pyrotechnics, including a show in Oakmont on Wednesday.

But they aren’t just Pennsylvania’s little secret. In fact, over 800 skies will be illuminated by Zambelli Fireworks this Fourth of July season. The New Castle-based company started out small in the 1800s as the hobby of Antonio Zambelli, an Italian immigrant, who wrote down his recipes for fireworks in a little black book and worked in the steel mills by day. He shared his passion for his art with his sons who passed their …
