If you want to avoid getting the flu this year, you're in luck. There are several local opportunities to get a flu shot. Here's a look at some of them: Forbes Regional Hospital Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville will be hosting a public flu vaccination clinic on Friday, Oct. 5, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the hospital’s Learning Centers. Appointments are available by calling the West Penn Allegheny Physician Access Line at 1-877-284-2000. Appointments are not required; walk-ins are welcome. Patients covered by Medicare Part B should bring their card to the vaccination session so that Forbes Regional can bill their Medicare carrier directly. October is breast cancer awareness month.
October is breast cancer awareness month, and a local hospital is kicking it off with some pink. Beginning Monday, Oct. 1, the signage atop the hospital will be lit pink. The Forbes sign will remain pink all month long in recognition of those who have been touched by breast cancer. Forbes will be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness all month long with different events in an effort to educate employees, patients, and visitors about the importance of screening and early detection. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new facility on Monday.
A new state-of-the-art Breast Care Center that will offer women living in the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh access to the region’s most comprehensive and world class breast cancer services opened at Forbes Regional Hospital on Tuesday. Officials from Forbes, West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) and Highmark celebrated the opening of the new Breast Care Center at the Monroeville hospital on Monday. A community open house to showcase the center also will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 9 to 11 a.m. The public will have an opportunity to tour the new center and meet with physicians leading the program. A historic, nationwide study will be held in the region beginning Tuesday, June 19. Plum, Oakmont and Verona residents can participate.
The American Cancer Society and West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) invite Pittsburgh-area residents to participate in a historic, nationwide study that will provide valuable information needed to fight the war against cancer and save lives. Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) is designed to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause cancer. Dr. Christoph Kaufmann has been named the new Medical Director of Trauma Services at Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville. Forbes announced earlier this year its intention to pursue a Level II trauma designation from the state. Prior to joining Forbes Regional, Kaufmann was the Medical Director of Trauma, Critical Care, and Emergency Surgery at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, TN. During this time, he also held an appointment as a Professor of Surgery at East Tennessee State University. Kaufmann retired from the US Army in 2002 as a Colonel in the Medical Corps. He attended medical school at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, and completed his surgical residency training at Tripler Army …

Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville is now seeing patients in its new Advanced Wound Healing Center. The center offers services for the evaluation and management of non-healing wounds. In addition to being painful and embarrassing, a non-healing wound can limit a person’s ability to function to his or her full potential. Wound healing also is often impacted by other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, immune disorders and breathing difficulties. Renovations, additional signs and two specialized centers are in the works.
West Penn Allegheny Health System and Highmark Inc. will pour $20 million into expanding services and renovating Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville this year, the companies said during a press conference Wednesday morning. Among projects planned for the hospital are renovations to nursing floors, the addition of signs on the building and along roads, and the creation of one center devoted to breast care and another to complex traumas. Beginning the first week in January, Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville will offer prenatal yoga classes. Classes will be led by a yoga-trained Perinatal Fitness Instructor. The gentle stretching and toning exercises help prepare pregnant women’s bodies for delivery and aid in recovery after delivery. No previous yoga experience is required. A physician or midwife must sign consent prior to starting class. Classes will be held Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the hospital’s learning centers. Classes are $5 each or participants can purchase five classes for $25 and receive the sixth class for free. Registration is required. To sign up, call 1-877-284-2000.
