The Pittsburgh area is expected to experience high winds and heavy rain late Monday night through early Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Allegheny County and surrounding areas. The warning, which went into effect at 6 p.m. Monday, includes Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Greene, Indiana, Jefferson, Lawrence and Washington counties in Pennsylvania. Harry Goldin wasn't planning a pit stop in Pennsylvania after his New York City vacation. The Chicago resident sat in the Pittsburgh International Airport terminal Monday afternoon, slowly repacking his suitcase. One flight cancellation and $400 later, he said he's finally heading back home. "I was supposed to fly from New York to Chicago yesterday," Goldin said. "They cancelled my flight from New York. Verona has declared a disaster emergency, and Plum and Oakmont officials expect to do so.
The worst part of the "Frankenstorm" is expected to hit our area Monday night into Tuesday, and Plum-Oakmont officials are getting ready. As of 1:30 p.m. Monday, Verona Mayor Dave Ricupero declared a disaster emergency for the borough. Allegheny County also has done so. Plum Mayor Rich Hrivnak said he and borough administrators have been monitoring the storm very closely. Though an official declaration has not been made, Hrivnak said he does expect there to be one "to stay on the safe side." Oakmont police Chief David DiSanti said he and Mayor Bob Fescemyer are keeping an eye on the storm at this time. "The possibility of a declaration does exist," he said. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald today declared a countywide disaster emergency to enable county and municipal governments to respond effectively to the impact of Hurricane Sandy. The storm is still forecast to impact our area, and watches for flooding, high wind and snow are now in effect. The time frame for any significant weather should be late today through Thursday, with the heaviest rainfall and strongest winds expected tonight through much of the day Tuesday. Threats include flooding, with small creeks, streams and areas of poor drainage causing issues earlier this week, followed by possible river flooding later in the week. Our local boroughs have rescheduled trick-or-treating due to bad weather.
The weather forecast for Halloween sure is terrifying, so our local communities have rescheduled its trick-or-treating time. Plum, Oakmont, Verona boroughs' trick-or-treat times have been moved to Saturday, Nov. 3, from 6 to 8 p.m. For those of you on the Verona Hilltop, Penn Hills also has postponed trick-or-treating to Saturday. Police Chief David DiSanti said the move was made in an effort to keep residents and children safe from potential effects of the "Frankenstorm." National Hurricane Center forecasters warn against underestimating Hurricane Sandy. In Western PA, residents now are under a high wind warning as well as a flood watch.
Federal emergency management and weather officials on Sunday said the time for preparing for Hurricane Sandy is rapidly coming to an end. "The time for preparing and talking is about over," said Craig Fugate, administrator for the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "People need to be acting about now." Hurricane Sandy is expected to affect as many as 50 million people as it makes its westward turn toward the East Coast. As of Sunday afternoon, Western Pennsylvania residents remain under a high wind warning through noon Tuesday as well as a flood watch through Tuesday night. Hurricane Sandy is forecast to bring heavy rains, strong winds and a significant storm surge to the Mid-Atlantic States and southern New England on Monday and Tuesday—and the Pittsburgh region will be affected by this storm. The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch and high wind warning for the region—including Plum, Oakmont and Verona—Monday and Tuesday. The East Coast braces for Hurricane Sandy, which is expected to hit the Pittsburgh region with strong winds and snowfall at the beginning of next week.
Pittsburgh International Airport is prepared for an East Coast "Frankenstorm" predicted to barrel through the Pittsburgh region next week, an airport official said. Airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny said Pittsburgh International finalized its 2012-13 snow removal plan at the beginning of October, and is prepared to put the plan into action if an early bout of winter weather strikes the airport. The now Category II Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall Thursday in the Bahamas, is expected to arrive in the Pittsburgh region at the beginning of next week, converging with a cold front to bring strong winds and snowfall. It's too early to tell what kind of effect Hurricane Sandy will have on our area, but here's a look at how the county is preparing and the forecast.
Our area had tons of sunshine and warm weather over the last few days, but that's all going to change. The weather this weekend is only going to get worse as forecasters track the eventual collision of Hurricane Sandy from the south with another storm system from the Midwest—it look as though Sandy will be in the vicinity early next week. The National Weather Service is reporting that combination could bring snow, wind, rain and flooding to much of Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency also has indicated that the potential heavy rains, high winds and risk of flooding may result in extensive damage to roads, streets, bridges and property, according to an Allegheny County press release.
