Freezing Rain, Icy Roads Expected in Plum-Oakmont on Friday

NWS issues winter weather advisory.

Expect freezing rain and ice accumulations of about a tenth of an inch on Friday. That's the word from the National Weather Service. It issued a winter weather advisory that is in effect from 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. The freezing rain is expected to begin between 6 and 8 a.m. and end between 1 and 3 p.m. The National Weather Service warns of hazardous travel conditions because of ice-covered roads. Winds of 5 to 10 miles per hour with gusts up to 20 mph are also forecast. A winter weather advisory means freezing rain will cause travel difficulties. Stay in touch. Winter Weather Advisory: Mixture of Snow, Sleet, and Freezing Rain Predicted for Morning Rush

The storm is expected to begin after midnight.

There could be very little rush to the Monday morning rush hour. The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a winter weather advisory from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday for most of Western Pennsylvania, including Plum, Oakmont and Verona. A mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected overnight into Monday morning. Due to very cold ground and snow pack, roads and sidewalks are expected to be icy. Snow, Wintery Mix in Plum-Oakmont Forecast

A winter weather advisory has been issued for our area.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Allegheny County—Plum, Oakmont and Verona included—beginning Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Snow, sleet and freezing rain are expected in our area, and the advisory is in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 10 a.m. Wednesday. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of snow, along with a light glaze from freezing rain is expected. The weather could cause hazardous travel conditions due to snow, sleet and ice-covered roads. Motorists should use caution. According to a statement from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, crews are pretreating roadways and preparing for the storm. Rain Causes Icy Roads Wednesday Morning

Take caution if you're heading out the door.

The National Weather Service issued a special weather statement calling for icy road conditions in Allegheny and surrounding counties Wednesday morning. Rain moving through the area—including in Plum, Oakmont and Verona—has created some icy conditions. According to the NWS, several counties are reporting ice on roads due to surface temperatures being below freezing, despite the fact that air temperatures are in the upper 30s and lower 40s. Pittsburgh Post Gazette traffic reporter Jon Schmitz said on Twitter that multiple crashes have been reported on Route 28 in Tarentum due to the icy roads.
