This year's event will be benefiting a local family.
The annual Oakmont-Verona Twin Boro 5K race will be benefiting a little boy in need this year. The race will be held on Saturday, June 9. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. at Riverside Park in Oakmont. The race begins at 9 a.m. and will led runners on a 3.1-mile loop through Oakmont and Verona. The cost is $20. Proceeds from the race will support Tanner's Troopers, a group dedicated to raising money for the care of Tanner Young, 5. Tanner the son of Verner Elementary School teacher Nicole Young and grandson of Riverview High School secretary Sandy Savinda, born pre-mature with cerebral palsey. St. Irenaeus School in Oakmont will be hosting a golf outing next month. The 13th-annual event will be held Sunday, June 10, at Birdsfoot Golf Club in Freeport. The $100-per-person cost includes 18 holes of golf, cart rental, on-site driving range, course refreshments, dinner (golf attire) and skill prize. Sponsorship packages also are available. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start at 2. Dinner and skill prizes immediately follow. The Plum High Music Boosters' 2nd annual Vera Bradley Bingo will be held on Sunday, April 29, at the Holiday Park Fire Hall. Doors open at 1 p.m. and the bingo games start at 2. Tickets are $20 in advance and include 20 bingo cards to win Vera Bradley purses, totes and items, one door prize ticket, dessert buffet and drinks. The two establishments in Oakmont will be selling cookies for Autism Awareness Month.
If you're craving cookies, you can buy some at Panera Bread or Oakmont Bakery to benefit a good cause. Both establishments are selling cookies in honor of Autism Awareness Month and donating proceeds to local charities. Panera will be selling "Pieces of Hope for Autism" shortbread cookies shaped in the autism puzzle piece logo from Friday, April 13, to Sunday, April 22. All proceeds will benefit The Autism Center of Pittsburgh. The Oakmont Bakery also will be selling puzzle-shaped M&M cookies. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Watson Institute, a Sewickley-based school for children with special needs. The Riverview Athletic Association will hold a musical spring fundraiser on March 31. Pittsburgh musician Bill Deasy will be playing at the Oakmont Elks Lodge on that date. The Oaks Theater in Oakmont and Eljay's Used Books in Dormont are celebrating Women in Horror Recognition Month, as well as raising money for a cause.
Now that the day of roses and heart-shaped chocolates is in the past, it’s time to get to the scary part of February. The Plum Music Boosters will host a spaghetti dinner on Friday, Feb. 24. The dinner will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Monroeville Assembly of God Church, 4561 Old William Penn Highway, in Monroeville. The Plum High School jazz band and other students from the music program will be performing throughout the evening. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the Door. The cost is $5 for children 10 and younger. The cost includes spaghetti with a meatless sauce, meatballs, salad, bread and desserts. The Kiwanis Club of Penn Hills will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast on Saturday. The breakfast will be held at Mt. Hope Church, 12106 Frankstown Road in Penn Hills, from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children ages 10 and younger—it includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, orange juice and coffee/tea. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Michael Crawshaw Memorial Fund. Crawshaw, a Penn Hills police officer, was killed in 2009 in the line of duty. Tickets are available from any Kiwanis member, at the door, or by calling Beth at 412-241-7312.
