Meals On Wheels Program Creates Successful Model for Delivering Healthy Food, Cutting Costs
Lutheran Service Society, the largest Meals On Wheels program in the state, serves a site in Plum and others around Western Pennsylvania.
The very mission of the Meals On Wheels program is to feed the elderly and disabled with healthy, nutritious meals. That can be a costly and overwhelming task. The Lutheran Service Society, the largest provider of Meals on Wheels services in Pennsylvania, last year began seeking to serve more locally-sourced food and increase the quality and amount of food delivered to its clients. At the same time, it aimed to keep costs manageable and grow to serve more communities.
