Ask Dr. Paula

Balancing the Ups and Downs of the Holiday Season

Dr. Paula suggests five stressors to avoid and five attitudes to embrace that will help to deal effectively with the highs and lows of a season filled with fun and festivity, yet often marred by stress and sadness.

No matter which of the winter holidays you celebrate, they all seem to share the ying and yang of ups and downs; fun and festivity; and stress and sadness. The season of lights sometimes brings on a personal season of darkness. The time of giving frequently results in feelings of loss and emptiness. Everything just results in higher highs and lower lows when we’re surrounded by the chaotic activity of a time when so much is expected of us and there seems to be so little time and energy to fulfill those expectations. Couple that with the memories and experiences of the past year, and it can result in what seems to be a dark cloud overshadowing our best efforts to focus on the season’s joy. Holiday blues can result from a number of things …

Recipe of the Week: Baked Brie with Apricot, Honey & Almonds

This dish will satisfy your guests at any holiday party.

Place one cup of apricot preserves on top of…

State Police: Christmas Brings Rise in DUI Crashes, Arrests

Pennsylvania State Police and the Pennsylvania DUI Association discuss drunken driving prevention in Robinson.

It's an unfortunate part of the Christmas season each year, Pennsylvania State Trooper Robin Mungo said. "We usually start to see it rise around Thanksgiving," Mungo said of drunken-driving arrests and crashes. "So this is a reminder to people around the holidays. If you have a friend who you've seen drinking, stop them before they get into a car."  Standing alongside the state's DUI Victims Moving Memorial at the Mall at Robinson last week, Mungo said state police typically handle an increased number of drunken-driving arrests, crashes and fatalities during the December holiday season. Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and Pennsylvania DUI Association officials joined her at the memorial to urge Western Pennsylvania's drivers not …

FBI Offers Tips for Safe Cyber Monday Shopping

If it's too good to be true, it probably is, bureau says.

Today is Cyber Monday, the day that people who did not find all their holiday gifts over the Black Friday weekend turn to the Internet for other shopping deals. Scammers try to prey on Cyber Monday bargain hunters by advertising "one day only" promotions from recognized brands. Consumers should be on the watch for too good to be true emails from unrecognized websites. In advance of the holiday season, the FBI reminds shoppers to beware of cyber criminals and their aggressive and creative ways to steal money and personal information. Scammers use many techniques to fool potential victims including fraudulent auction sales, reshipping merchandise purchased with a stolen credit card, sale of fraudulent or stolen gift cards through auction …
