The running backs coach is recovering after being severely burned Jan. 6 when a fire broke out at his town home in Seven Fields.
During a pre-draft press conference held Monday, Kevin Colbert, general manager for the Pittsburgh Steelers, said the organization is welcoming Kirby Wilson back to work. “It was really inspiring having him back in the fold, and I surely want to acknowledge it,” he said. A running backs coach who is entering his sixth season with the Steelers, Wilson, 50, was severely burned Jan. 6 when an early-morning fire broke out in his townhouse on Jameson Way in Seven Fields. Investigators said they've determined that running backs coach Kirby Wilson was injured after trying to put out the flames in a kitchen blaze.
Investigators have determined the blaze that severely burned Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson at his home in Seven Fields was caused by a grease fire, a state police fire marshal said today. Trooper Luke Nelson of the state police barracks in Butler said Wilson had been cooking chicken in the kitchen of his townhome on Jameson Way about 2:45 a.m. Jan. 6 when the stove caught fire. Nelson said evidence suggests Wilson, 50, was injured when he attempted to put out the flames. The coach, who still is undergoing medical treatment at UPMC Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh, has little to no recollection of the fire, Nelson said. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. Steelers officials say running backs Coach Kirby Wilson remains in critical condition after being burned on more than 45 percent of his body in a fire earlier this month at his home.
The Steelers organization on Tuesday released an update on running backs Coach Kirby Wilson’s condition on behalf of the coach's family. The 50-year-old was severely burned Jan. 6 when an early-morning fire broke out in his townhouse on Jameson Way in Seven Fields. He was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh, where he remains in critical condition in the hospital's Trauma Burn Center. "In addition to burns sustained over 45 percent of his body, he has suffered a smoke inhalation injury and will require multiple operative procedures in the future," the Steelers statement said. Running backs coach Kirby Wilson is being treated for serious burns at UPMC Mercy after fire at his home near Cranberry.
Kirby Wilson, the running backs coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers, is being treated today for injuries after a fire early this morning swept through his townhouse in Seven Fields. Cranberry Township police and firefighters from Adams Township, Cranberry Township, Callery, Harmony, Zelienople and South Butler were dispatched to the blaze at 2:42 a.m. in the Estates of Seven Fields, a townhouse community where Wilson, 49, lives at 141 Jameson Way. Neighbors said smoke was pouring out of the house, and a maintenance man for the complex said a stove may have caught fire in the kitchen. WPXI-TV is reporting that Pittsburgh Steelers running backs coach Kirby Wilson was "badly burned" in a house fire in Seven Fields, Butler County early Friday morning. He was flown to a Pittsburgh-area hospital. It was unclear which facility is caring for the coach—Mercy Hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital and UPMC-Presbyterian did not list him as a patient. There is no word on his condition.
