Drainage Work to Occur on Route 286 in Plum This Week

Expect some road restrictions.

Pennsylvania Department of Transportation crews will be performing drainage work on a Plum highway this week. Drainage improvement work is scheduled to occur on Route 286 in Plum/Monroeville through Friday, Feb. 8, between the Westmoreland County line and Route 22. McGinnis Sisters Taking Part in ‘We Can Read!’ Project to Honor Sandy Hook Victims

Books may be dropped off at the grocer’s locations in Monroeville, Adams Township and Brentwood.

McGinnis Sisters Special Food Stores is teaming up with the Student Nonprofit Alliance at Slippery Rock University and local libraries to collect books in honor of the children and teachers killed during December’s shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. The program, called We Can Read!, asks participants to purchase a children’s book, read it to a child and then donate the book to the We Can Read! project. The books then are sent to regional child-serving organizations, including Head Start programs, day care centers, elementary schools, children’s libraries and other similar programs. The Student Nonprofit Alliance began organizing the project last month with the help of Alice Del Vecchio, an assistant professor of …

Traffic Stoppages to Occur on the Parkway East Sunday

Traffic will be stopped periodically between the Penn Hills and Monroeville exits for Utility work.

Traffic in both directions on the Parkway East in Wilkins and Monroeville will be stopped briefly twice on Sunday morning, Dec. 16, weather permitting. Two stoppages of approximately 10 minutes will occur between the Rodi Road/Penn Hills Interchange (Exit 81) and the Monroeville/PA Turnpike Interchange (Exit 84). The first stoppage will occur at 9 a.m. near Exit 81 and the second at 11 a.m. west of Exit 84. UPDATED: Navy SEAL Killed in Hostage Rescue Is Monroeville Native

Petty Officer 1st Class Nicolas D. Checque, 28, a highly decorated Navy SEAL, died of combat related injuries sustained Dec. 8 while supporting operations in Afghanistan. WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, VA, reports that Checque, a highly-decorated combat veteran, was assigned to an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare command. The Department of Defense confirmed that Checque was from Monroeville but currently lived in Virginia Beach, Va. He was a 2002 Norwin High School graduate and wrestler at the school, located in North Huntingdon. Checque was among the special forces team assigned to rescue an American doctor who had been abducted in Afghanistan. CCAC Cuts Hours for Part-Time Faculty, Staff to Avoid Obamacare

The move will cut credit hours for adjunct faculty and temporary part-timers to avoid full-time status but will not affect permanent part-time workers who are already eligible for the college's health care plan.

Community College of Allegheny County is cutting hours for some 400 temporary part-time workers as of Dec. 31 in a move to save money by not having to provide health insurance coverage for them under the Affordable Health Care Act The cuts would affect staff at CCAC–Boyce Campus in Monroeville as well as CCAC's Braddock Hills Center. The Post-Gazette reports that, according to CCAC's president, Alex Johnson, the move is to save money during a time the college faces a funding reduction. But according to the Post-Gazette, some of the employees affected, including 200 adjunct faculty members, feel the decision is an attempt to circumvent the national health care legislation that goes into effect in January 2014. Plum School Board Forgoes Participating in Charter School

Board members said they don't want to participate in creating a charter school with the Penn Hills and Gateway school districts.

Members of the Plum School Board have passed on the opportunity to create a charter school with the Penn Hills and Gateway school districts. At an education committee meeting on Monday, a majority of the board members voiced concerns about joining in the effort to convert the Boyce Campus Middle College High School program into the High School and Beyond Charter School. BCMC currently operates at Community College of Allegheny County's Boyce Campus in Monroeville as an alternative schooling option for students in Plum, Gateway and Penn Hills school districts—Woodland Hills opted out of the program this year.
