Ring in the new year with fellow Pittsburghers at Highmark's First Night Pittsburgh event. The family-friendly event is produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and sponsored by Highmark. First Night provides visitors the opportunity to ring in the new year while celebrating the arts—dance, music, theater, comedy, hands-on activities and more. Several of the city's theaters will be hosting a variety of performances. The event begins at 6 p.m. with the Dollar Bank children's fireworks display and a performance by American Idol finalist—and Washington County resident—Adam Brock & The Soul Band (at the stage on Seventh Street and Penn Avenue). f you plan to party on New Year’s Eve, AAA has some sobering statistics for you to think about before drinking and driving. Compared to all other days in 2011, New Year’s Day had the highest percentage of deaths that occurred in crashes with a driver who had a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher, according to AAA spokesperson Bevi Powell. AAA statistics show that 122 people were killed in crashes on New Year’s Day 2012, and a little more than half of those crashes involved a drunk driver. “If you plan to drink, absolutely don’t drive,” Powell said. “If you plan to drink, make sure to bring a friend who can drive you home.” She also cautioned against anyone getting into a car with a driver who has been drinking. Last month, Clique Vodka provided Patch readers with holiday cocktail recipes. This week, it's all about New Year's Eve. Here are the recipes they shared on KDKA's Pittsburgh Today Live earlier this week: Black & Gold 1 ¼ oz Clique Vodka ½ oz Chai tea syrup* 4 oz lemonade Pour Clique Vodka into glass over ice and add lemonade. Slowly add chai syrup so it collects at the bottom of the glass, creating a layered effect. One Marvelous Mimosa 1 oz Clique Vodka 1 ½ oz freshly squeezed orange juice 3 ½ oz sparkling wine Chill the Clique Vodka in a cocktail tin with ice and strain into a flute glass.
