Ring in 2013 at Pittsburgh First Night

The downtown event promises a lot of fun and activities for visitors.

Ring in the new year with fellow Pittsburghers at Highmark's First Night Pittsburgh event. The family-friendly event is produced by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and sponsored by Highmark. First Night provides visitors the opportunity to ring in the new year while celebrating the arts—dance, music, theater, comedy, hands-on activities and more. Several of the city's theaters will be hosting a variety of performances. The event begins at 6 p.m. with the Dollar Bank children's fireworks display and a performance by American Idol finalist—and Washington County resident—Adam Brock & The Soul Band (at the stage on Seventh Street and Penn Avenue). January: A Time to Look Back and a Time to Look Ahead

Dr. Paula reflects on the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions and the difficulty of maintaining them throughout out the year.

New beginnings seem to call for change—new ways of being, thinking and doing. There’s no beginning quite like the start of a new year that causes us to reflect on the old ways of the past and consider ways to be, think and do better in the future. Making the resolutions is the easy part.  Keeping the resolutions for 365 days and in this Leap Year, 366 days, is the difficult part. Why do 40 to 45 percent of Americans even make resolutions when they hardly last past Jan. 31?  New Year’s resolutions are perhaps one of the great mysteries of human behavior.  What’s behind the practice of making New Year’s resolutions?  Why do we do the same thing year after year and expect a different result?  Hmmm … that’s the definition of insanity, isn’t it…
