Oakmont Council met on Monday evening to begin sifting through a preliminary general fund budget.
Oakmont officials have started working on a 2013 borough budget. On Monday, borough council met to discuss a very preliminary budget and wish lists for several departments. Numbers are far from being finalized, according to borough manager Lisa Cooper Jensen, because it's been hard to determine how much tax revenue the borough should expect after the countywide property reassessments. "It's nothing written in stone," she said. Councilman Tim Favo agreed, saying the budget is "a skeleton" at this point. Jensen said she has yet to receive a certified reassessment value from the county, so she's been using the 2012 numbers as a base. However, the borough manager said she is considering more revenue due to the higher reassessments in the …

Teens who are interested in law enforcement have been learning about police work from Oakmont's finests.
Sporting a Harley jacket, Oakmont police Officer Trevor Okonak is cornered as he sits in a chair at the police department. He speaks, and there's a hint of hesitance and nervousness in his voice. At this time, he's not an officer—he's a suspect. Okonak and other Oakmont officers have been spending a few hours each Tuesday night teaching nine local teens about police work through the department's Explorer program. Last week, the students acted as crime scene investigators—going through a scene complete with blood, bullets and a dummy—and interrogators for a murder. Okonak played the role of the murder suspect during a traffic stop and interrogations. "You should have seen them go through that crime scene," Okonak said. "They picked up on so…

Police officers are not tax collectors and should never be treated as such. A parking enforcement officer is the best way to go to collect funds for the city and maintain parking rules. Additional police officers, especially in the daytime, is completely unnecessary. If the Oakmont police aren't bored enough already, they certainly will be if they have a new hire. Also, nothing good happens when …   more ›
