DETOUR: Squirrel Hill Tunnel to be Closed for Next Two Weekends

Here are some detour details if you're traveling on the parkway over the next few weekends.

Get ready to experience some delays on the Parkway East for the next two weekends. The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the parkway will be closed during the next two weekends, April 19 to 22 and April 26 to 29. The closures will begin earlier than usual—from 10 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. The posted detour will require eastbound traffic to form a single lane exiting at the Squirrel Hill/Homestead interchange (Exit 74). Significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The inbound (westbound) tunnel will remain open while the outbound tunnel is closed, although short-term inbound traffic stoppages may occur for equipment access and material removal.   To…

Outbound Parkway East Overhead Sign Inspections Saturday

There will be single-lane closures and traffic shifts during the outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel closure.

Overhead sign safety inspections on the outbound Parkway East will occur on Saturday morning, April 6, weather permitting. Work requiring intermittent single-lane closures and traffic shifts will occur from 6 a.m. to noon on the outbound Parkway East between Churchill (Exit 79B) and the Monroeville/Plum (Exit 84) interchanges. Two of three outbound lanes will remain open at all times. Inbound traffic will not be affected.  There is also an outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel closure this weekend. Next Squirrel Hill Tunnel Closure to Occur This Weekend

Tunnel closure will begin on Friday.

The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be closed this weekend, April 5-8, and significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The closure will begin 11 p.m. on Friday, April 5, through 6 a.m. on Monday, April 8. Crews will begin work postponed from this past weekend to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and continue rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. When overall work is completed, vertical clearance in the eastbound tunnel will increase from 13 feet, 6 inches to 14 feet, 9 inches.  Signs will be posted to guide motorists. Parkway East Overhead Sign Inspections to Occur Saturday in Churchill

Motorists should be aware of these additional parkway restrictions.

Motorists traveling inbound on the parkway will experience some restrictions Saturday. Overhead sign safety inspections on the inbound Parkway East (westbound I-376) in Churchill will occur on Saturday morning, March 23, weather permitting. Work requiring intermittent single-lane closures and traffic shifts will occur from 6 a.m. to noon on the inbound Parkway East between the Monroeville/Route 22 (Exit 80) and Churchill (Exit 79B) interchanges. Mackin Engineering and the Sofis Rigging Company will conduct the work. Parkway East Squirrel Hill Tunnel Lane Closures Resume

The work resumed Thursday at 9 p.m.

Work to rehabilitate the Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) resumed Thursday night. As a courtesy to motorists and travelers, traffic restrictions related to the rehabilitation project were postponed over the holiday season. Restriections will continue to occur on the following schedule: Westbound (inbound) single lane traffic: Eastbound (outbound) single lane traffic: No westbound full closures are scheduled at this time.  The a $49.5 million project to rehabilitate the Squirrel Hill Tunnel includes updating electrical, lighting, air control and ventilation systems, structural repairs to the walls and arched ceiling, tile repairs, installation of a water line and other improvements. Traffic Stoppages to Occur on the Parkway East Sunday

Traffic will be stopped periodically between the Penn Hills and Monroeville exits for Utility work.

Traffic in both directions on the Parkway East in Wilkins and Monroeville will be stopped briefly twice on Sunday morning, Dec. 16, weather permitting. Two stoppages of approximately 10 minutes will occur between the Rodi Road/Penn Hills Interchange (Exit 81) and the Monroeville/PA Turnpike Interchange (Exit 84). The first stoppage will occur at 9 a.m. near Exit 81 and the second at 11 a.m. west of Exit 84. Westbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel to be Closed this Weekend

Two additional weekend closures anticipated this fall.

The westbound (inbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) will be closed this weekend, Oct. 12-15. The westbound closure will occur from 9 p.m. on Friday through 5 a.m. on Monday, according to PennDOT District 11 Press Officer Jim Struzzi. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. The posted detour will require westbound traffic to form a single lane exiting at the Edgewood/Swissvale interchange. Significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered.
