Petition Started in Memory of Plum Woman, Crash Victim

Debbie Solko's sister, Christine Beilstein, was killed in an accident last year. Now, she's starting a petition to make sure families in similar situations get justice.

The family of a Plum woman who died in a car accident has created a petition in the hopes of increasing the jail sentence for those accused of driving drunk and killing someone in the process. Debbie Solko, a Plum native, has created the petition in honor of her sister, Christine Beilstein. Beilstein, 45, of Plum Borough was pronounced dead at the scene of a May 12, 2012, head-on collision on Milltown Road in Penn Hills—very close to the Plum border. Her young son, Justin, who was 9 at the time of the accident and is a fourth-grader at Regency Park Elementary, has continued to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash. The driver, Duane Woodson, 51, was sentenced to 5 to 10 years in prison earlier this month. He pleaded guilty to …

Group Determined to Shine Light on Kennel’s Practices

An area group is determined to let local governments know about more humane ways to treat its strays and runaway dogs.

A loosely-knit group concerned with how Plum Borough’s animal control officer treats animals filled the first row of seats at the council meeting Monday intent on sharing horror stories allegedly perpetrated by Hoffman Kennels. Hoffman Kennels—owned by Gary Hoffman and located in Delmont—is contracted with Plum Borough for $5,000 a year to take care of its animal control problems. Residents of Plum and elsewhere told council about supposed horror stories, like the story Dale Walters of Murrysville told about a Great Dane being shot and stuffed into a garbage bag after the owner said they’d pick it up when they’d get home from vacation. Stories have been shared via a Facebook page called Stop Hoffman Kennels, which Walters created at the …

Teacher's Petition Asks Pennsylvanians to Reject Voter ID Law

The petition has already garnered more than 2,000 signatures.

More than 2,000 people have already signed a petition created by an area teacher urging Allegheny County's elections manager not enforce the new statewide voter ID law. The recently enacted law mandates that each voter present a valid photo ID on election day at the polls, a stipulation that opponents have said will ultimately prevent the poor, the elderly, and people of color in Pennsylvania from voting. "These demographic groups typically lean Democratic and local state Rep. Mike Turzai,R-Allegheny County, went so far as to admit that the voter ID law would 'allow Governor Romney to win the state of Pennsylvania," petition organizer Steven Singer said in a statement. "The law is purportedly intended to prevent voter fraud, a problem that…

Roddey Apologizes, Democrats Call for Him to Step Down After Controversial Remark

Allegheny County's GOP Chairman Jim Roddey on Wednesday said he was sorry for comparing supporters of President Obama to people with mental disabilities at a victory party for Rep. Randy Vulakovich.

Western Pennsylvania political figures and advocates for the disabled are reacting with dismay to a wisecrack from Former Allegheny County Executive Jim Roddey, who at a victory party Tuesday compared Obama supporters to people with mental disabilities. "I was a little surprised,” said Nate Locklin, president of the Ross Township Republican Committee. “Jim likes to tell jokes. That one was a little off. I was a little disappointed. I did not think it was appropriate. Disabilities aren't funny." On Wednesday afternoon Roddey issued an apology for the remarks. "I regret my comments," he said. "I have a long record of supporting people with disabilities and should have remembered that before I spoke. My remarks were inappropriate and I …

@Art – That’s hilarious, you’re dreaming if you believe that at your age anyone would desire to observe your behind astutely. Also, you’re like that racist, curmudgeonly old uncle who says inappropriate things in public like “Afro-Americans.” Maybe you should go hang out with your buddy Joe Biden. I know, you would be the perfect villain in a Scooby-Doo episode. Let’s get back to Voter ID laws. …   more ›
