Outbound Squirrel Hill Tunnel Closes this Weekend

The tunnel will remain open Memorial Day weekend.

The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the Parkway East (I-376) will be closed this weekend, May 17-20. The tunnel will remain open in both directions during the upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend, May 24-27, according to PennDOT. The closing will occur from 11 p.m. on Friday, May 17, through 6 a.m. on Monday, May 20 so that crews can begin the replacement of concrete bridge slabs inside the tunnel and continue to remove the tunnel ceiling. When overall work is completed, vertical clearance in the eastbound tunnel will increase from 13 feet-6 inches to 14 feet-9 inches.   Additional improvement activities include foundation work for the sign structure of the Over Height Truck Detection System, electrical work and concrete …

Pittsburgh Penguins Playoff Rally Set for Wednesday

Fans are invited to the Annihilate the Islanders rally in downtown Pittsburgh.

Allegheny County officials are planning an Annihilate the Islanders rally before the Pittsburgh Penguins' first playoff game Wednesday, May 1. The rally begins at noon in the Allegheny Courthouse courtyard and includes giveaways from the Penguins and Turner's Dairy and an appearance from Iceburgh. Val Porter from WDVE will host the event and the Kardasz Brothers will perform live music. The best-of-seven playoff series against the New York Islanders begins at 7:30 p.m. at Consol Energy Center. DETOUR: Squirrel Hill Tunnel to be Closed for Next Two Weekends

Here are some detour details if you're traveling on the parkway over the next few weekends.

Get ready to experience some delays on the Parkway East for the next two weekends. The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel on the parkway will be closed during the next two weekends, April 19 to 22 and April 26 to 29. The closures will begin earlier than usual—from 10 p.m. on Friday through 6 a.m. on Monday. Signs will be posted to guide motorists. The posted detour will require eastbound traffic to form a single lane exiting at the Squirrel Hill/Homestead interchange (Exit 74). Significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The inbound (westbound) tunnel will remain open while the outbound tunnel is closed, although short-term inbound traffic stoppages may occur for equipment access and material removal.   To…

Joyful Twirlers Baton Ministry Entertains Throughout the East Suburbs

The Christian-based ministry began in Forest Hills and is led by two Verona and Oakmont residents.

When Gina Stropkaj of Verona heard about a group called the Joyful Twirlers, she was ecstatic. "I couldn't believe there was a Christian organization doing something fun for girls," she said. "Baton twirling was something I did when I was younger, so I thought it would be something great that we could do together." The group, a Christian-based baton ministry, has been in existence for 13 years. Founded by Jessica Nigra of Forest Hills, the group began meeting and practicing at Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. For the last two years, Stropkaj has been acting as the group's director, and Oakmont resident Loretta Worsham has been acting as the assistant director of the group. Next Squirrel Hill Tunnel Closure to Occur This Weekend

Tunnel closure will begin on Friday.

The outbound (eastbound) Squirrel Hill Tunnel will be closed this weekend, April 5-8, and significant delays should be expected and alternate routes considered. The closure will begin 11 p.m. on Friday, April 5, through 6 a.m. on Monday, April 8. Crews will begin work postponed from this past weekend to remove the outbound tunnel ceiling and continue rehabilitation and preservation work on the outbound bridge over Commercial Street. Patch Poll: Should UPMC Be Considered a Nonprofit?

Or does it act more as a business? And what about the other major nonprofits in the area?

In a June 2012 "Taxpayer Alert," Allegheny County Controller Chelsa Wagner questioned the fairness of nonprofits that have expanded their roles beyond the traditional definition of a charitable organization, but still maintain tax-exempt status. "In these challenging financial times, it is our duty and responsibility to address the questions raised by a recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruling and determine if properties are used for a truly charitable purpose," Wagner said in the report. "While exemptions are justified for clearly charitable organizations such as churches, soup kitchens and many others, some are plainly unfair." RHS Student Named Luminari Award Scholar

Sophie Belch will receive $1,200 for admission to a Luminari camp.

Sophie Belch, a student at Riverview High School, has been named one of the 2013 Luminari Award Scholars. She will receive an award of $1,200 for admission to Luminari's "I Want to Be an Ambassador!" camp. Luminari, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit organization,  chose awardees based on merit. Students who demonstrated motivation, open-mindedness and the willingness to pursue inspiration with "out of the box" activities. Each student also must excel both personally and academically at their respective school. The "I Want to be an Ambassador!" camp will be held in Pittsburgh from June 18 to 26.
