Graduation 2012: Congratulations, Plum Seniors

More than 300 students received their high school diploma Thursday evening during the commencement ceremony at Plum Senior High School.

Despite a late evening rain shower, Plum Senior High School hosted its annual commencement ceremony outdoors on the athletic field Thursday evening, where 318 students earned their high school diploma. Senior High School Principal Ryan Kociela welcomed the crowd and kicked off the ceremony that celebrated the class of 2012. Valedictorian Stacy Liu asked her classmates to make sure they took the time to give thanks as the culmination of 13 years of school came to an end. “Take a second to thank everyone that helped you get you to where you are today. Remember every person who has touched your life in some way,” Liu said. “Never take the opportunities you are given for granted. Forget the small problems of the past, cut the ties that …

East Boros Sports Hall of Fame Golf Tournament Raises Scholarship Money

Everything started off sunny for golfers—until the clouds rolled in. But the day brightened up so the golf could continue and some deserving students could accept their scholarships.

When it comes to golf around the Pittsburgh area lately, rain has been par for the course. And so it was for the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame East Boros Chapter's eighth annual Scholar-Athlete Golf Classic, which started at 10:30 Monday morning at Edgewood Country Club in Churchill. The 72 golfers who turned out for the event hit the practice range, had the putting contest and broke for a hot dog-and-hamburger lunch before the shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. But about 1:15, the dark clouds rolled in, bringing rain but not dampening the spirits of those gathered to raise money for the East Boros'  scholarship fund. Over the last seven years, the organization has awarded 24 $1,000 scholarships to deserving students. This year's recipients, …

He's up for best actor in the annual The Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater, but Plum Borough High School junior Jonathan Andrew is happy to share the spotlight with friends and family

Watching the nominees for best actor, best actress and best musical perform at last year’s Gene Kelly Awards, Jonathan Andrew would have never imagined that just one year later, he would be one of those up on stage. “I still don’t believe it,” the 17-year-old Plum Borough resident said. “This year I was definitely not expecting a nomination at all.” The Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater recognize and encourage musical theater and arts education, according to the website of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, which gives out the annual awards in conjunction with the University of Pittsburgh. Modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards and held at the Benedum Center in downtown Pittsburgh, the award ceremony, held this …

Plum's Baseball Team Wins Big, Clinches Section Title

Mustangs defeat Gateway 8-1 in section finale.

The Mustangs clinched a tie of the section title with an 8-1 victory over Gateway on Wednesday.  Plum concluded section play with a record of 10-2, equaling Kiski Area, and an overall record of 12-4 on the season.  Christian Suprano and Cory Podvasnik belted home runs to propel the offense, and Anthony Garofalo pitched seven strong innings in the win.   Plum got on the board in the second inning on Suprano’s three-run blast, which brought in Zachary Williams and Joseph Bailey.  The Mustangs added another three runs in the next inning when Podvasnik’s homer drove in Cory Myers, and Bailey delivered a run-scoring double. Plum finally chased Gateway starting pitcher Luke Kochka in the fifth inning thanks to a balanced attack, as every Mustang…

Channel One News Anchor Visits Riverview High School

Plum native Steven Fabian shares career advice with students in the sports/entertainment management classes.

The name Steven Fabian might not ring a bell for many adults—at least not yet. But when the morning bell rings, more than 6 million high school students wait to see his face when they tune in to Channel One News, a 12-minute news program for teens broadcast via satellite to thousands of high schools across the country. For some students at Riverview High School in Oakmont—one of those schools—Fabian became more than just a face on television last week. He visited the school to talk to business education teacher Patsy Kvortek’s Sports and Entertainment Management/Marketing classes about career choices and his own path to success. Fabian, who grew up in Plum Borough, has been a news anchor and reporter on the Channel One News team for the …
