Riverview Officials Preparing 'Very Preliminary' Budget

A preliminary budget must be approved by February for the district to apply for tax exceptions.

Riverview officials are working on preparing a preliminary budget that they hope to approve next month. Though a final budget is not due until the end of June, districts that are considering increasing taxes above the allowed state maximum under Pennsylvania's Act 1 of 2006 must send a preliminary budget to the state department of education. To raise taxes above the Act 1 index, which is 0.21 percent for the 2013-14 fiscal year, districts must apply for allowed exceptions—for special education costs, pensions, etc. Riverview School District followed the same procedure last year. District Business Manager Frank Thompson also said officials would have to lower the millage rate due to the county-wide reassessments. Under state law, taxing …

Parents Speak Out Against Lady Raiders Basketball Coach

A group of parents told the Riverview School Board they are concerned about girls' basketball coach's behavior.

Some parents say they're unhappy with the coach's treatment of players on the Riverview High School girls' basketball team. On Monday night, a handful of parents told the school board they're "disturbed" by coach Keith Stitt's behavior toward the Lady Raider team. Others defended the coach. Stitt, who has been coaching the Lady Raiders for four seasons, didn't respond to emails sent by the Plum-Oakmont Patch seeking comment. Parent Carol Segelson Dezort said the coaching staff has displayed aggressive and intimidating behavior toward the players. Dezort also said Stitt grabbed a player by the neck during the Jan. 14 game against Springdale—he received a three- to five-day suspension. "I'm sure we can do better as a district in finding …

Safety Upgrades For Verner Elementary Considered

The Riverview School Board is considering upgrading safety measures at one district elementary school.

Verner Elementary School might undergo safety renovations over the summer months. During the Riverview School Board meeting Monday, district architect Dick Jaynes, who works for Axis Architecture, presented a plan that would add doors to classrooms and a vestibule between the entrance and the school's main office—features that both Tenth Street Elementary and Riverview High School have. Verner was built as an open plan school, according to Jaynes, and none of the building's classrooms had doors. In 2003, the school was renovated and doors were installed in some classrooms. Another portion of the project includes upgrading the existing doorways in the school building. "It's just another level of protection," he said. Jaynes added that …

Riverview Notebook: Ecology Field Trip, Volunteers & More

Here is a roundup of items discussed at the Riverview School Board meeting earlier this week.

Here's a look at what Riverview officials discussed at the Sept. 17 school board meeting: Ecology Trip Fifth grade students will be attending an ecology outdoor experience at the Lutherlyn Environmental Center in Prospect on Oct. 11 and 12. Officials agreed to pay $6,533 for the program. Board member Maureen McClure questioned whether or not it would be a problem, given that Lutherlyn is a faith-based organization. However, officials agreed that the program attended by Riverview students exclusively is a nature-based program. "I went as a chaperone last year, and you wouldn't have known it was a faith-based organization," said board member Heidi Dolan. Library Aide Laurie Sliben of Oakmont was hired as the library aide at Tenth Street …
