Borough council is getting ready for road work this summer.
Now that spring is here, Oakmont Council is getting ready for road projects. Curb, road paving and brick reconstruction projects in the borough are expected to occur in the near future. Last week, council hired Joseph Palmieri Construction Inc. to replace curbs along Allegheny Avenue from College to California avenues for $23,500. Another firm submitted a lower bid of $18,185, but officials said Joseph Palmieri Construction was the lowest responsible bidder, due to mixed feedback about timeliness from references. Because the work affects traffic on one of the borough's main roads, Councilman Tim Favo said timeliness and following a schedule is important to the project. Motorists should be aware of these additional parkway restrictions.
Motorists traveling inbound on the parkway will experience some restrictions Saturday. Overhead sign safety inspections on the inbound Parkway East (westbound I-376) in Churchill will occur on Saturday morning, March 23, weather permitting. Work requiring intermittent single-lane closures and traffic shifts will occur from 6 a.m. to noon on the inbound Parkway East between the Monroeville/Route 22 (Exit 80) and Churchill (Exit 79B) interchanges. Mackin Engineering and the Sofis Rigging Company will conduct the work. Work begins on March 18, and the bridge is expected to close in April.
Work on a $1.2 million project to improve the bridge that carries Plum Street over Plum Creek in Oakmont and Verona will begin on Monday, March 18, weather permitting. The project includes replacing the bridge deck, strip seal dams, sidewalk and parapets, substructure repairs, spot/zone painting, milling and overlay the approaches and other improvements. Short-term traffic restrictions will begin on Monday in the bridge area east Allegheny River Boulevard near the intersection with Dark Hollow Road. Traffic will be restricted to a single lane alternating use from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays as needed through the end of March. Here's a traffic update for those who travel on Route 28.
Traffic on southbound (inbound) Route 28 in Pittsburgh and Millvale will be reduced to a single lane this weekend, March 8 to 11, weather permitting. Crews will continue work along the southbound lanes including new utility connections. Single lane traffic will occur from 8 p.m. on Friday (tonight) continuously through 5 a.m. on Monday between the 40th Street Bridge and East Ohio Street. This year’s PennDOT construction work will include $282 million worth of road and bridge improvement projects.
This year’s PennDOT construction work will include $282 million worth of road and bridge improvement projects that hit every corner of Allegheny County. About half of the money being spent on road projects in the county will be spent on bridge reconstruction. One of the most significant projects to begin this year, is the Hulton Bridge replacement in Oakmont and Harmar, according to PennDOT officials. PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna said during a press conference last week that the project is estimated to cost between $60 million and $80 million.
