Local school districts continue to explore and implement additional safety measures at school buildings.
Plum and Riverview school district officials are continuing discussions about making school buildings as safe as possible. Riverview officials are considering changing procedures for visitors, as well as upgrading school building windows and doors. Officials have been discussing these changes for at least a year, but the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut two months ago, refreshed the importance of school safety throughout the country. The Riverview School Board is considering upgrading safety measures at one district elementary school.
Verner Elementary School might undergo safety renovations over the summer months. During the Riverview School Board meeting Monday, district architect Dick Jaynes, who works for Axis Architecture, presented a plan that would add doors to classrooms and a vestibule between the entrance and the school's main office—features that both Tenth Street Elementary and Riverview High School have. Verner was built as an open plan school, according to Jaynes, and none of the building's classrooms had doors. In 2003, the school was renovated and doors were installed in some classrooms. Plum Councilman Keith Nowalk addressed the Plum School Board about school safety on Tuesday.
A Plum councilman says borough officials are willing to meet with school district officials to discuss safety plans. At Tuesday's school board meeting, Councilman Keith Nowalk addressed the board, saying there needs to be an open dialogue about safety in school buildings following last week's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT—20 first grade students and six staff members were killed. The district currently has one school resource officer—Plum police officer Mark Kost—stationed at the high school. Nowalk said the borough administration already has been directed to open up a dialogue with district administration and the Plum Police Department to "address, improve and ensure every student and teacher's safety. "This …

Information about safety and resources for tragedy are available on the district websites.
Plum and Riverview school districts have addressed school safety and resources to deal with tragic school violence after Friday's shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT. Counselors and teachers are available to students in Plum and Riverview who might have questions about the Newtown incident that left 20 first-graders and six of their teachers dead. "It is unfortunate that school violence once again makes headlines around the nation," a statement posted on the Plum School District website read. "This unexplainable and senseless act of violence tears at the fabric of all school communities. "It is inevitable that we focus on our own school safety and our children’s emotional well-being during this troubling time. It is our hope, …

Plum School District Superintendent Timothy Glasspool has said that there have been some acts of vandalism at an elementary school.
Plum school officials are expected to invest in a camera system and "No Trespassing" signs in an attempt to stop vandalism at schools. At a recent school board facilities committee meeting, Superintendent Tim Glasspool said there have been problems at Adlai Stevenson Elementary, which is off Preque Isle Drive and in the same complex as Oblock Junior High. Glasspool said people have been vandalizing the school building with graffitti and trespassing on the property—sometimes even climbing on the roof—after hours. Administrators met with police officers, teachers and parents to discuss the problem and said it would be best to enhance security at many of the district schools. A security camera system already will be in place at the new George…
